The '81 AFC Championship game between the Chargers and Dolphins are on. One of the greatest NFL games ever played.

On a personal side note: this game was a real highlight in Kevin Winslow's career. He truly showed his Hall of Fame grit in this game. Too bad his 'soldier' son has demonstrated less professionalism and determination in his entire short career to date than his father did during that one single game.

I hate my cable company.

That was a fantastic game. Kellen Winslow Sr. was amazing. Jr. will never live up to his namesake IMO.

Probably the greatest non-Cowboys game I ever watched. Ever.

I remember it like it was yesterday, though I was only 9.

Junior can do a lot for his own career by simply making smart choices OFF the field so that he can give himself more opportunites to make a name for himself ON the field. If he doesn't, he'll go down in history as "The Great Winslow's Son Who Couldn't Cut It In The NFL".

Let's take a closer look at that, okay?

Winslow Jr: "I'm a SOLDIER"!!!

Soon after, he goes out, crashes his motorcycle in a parking lot (if I remember correctly) and severely injuries himself.

James: "I'm a SOLDIER"!!!

During the weeks following his 'outburst', he's averaged close to 30 points a game.

Soldiers go to war with their comrades. They know that everyone is depending on everyone to do their jobs to just survive the day. Athletes are not soldiers, but their each player needs their fellow teammates to NOT do stupid things and kick themselves off the playing roster.

James is no soldier, he's a basketball player, but he's a comsummate professional like all of our service men and women. The media probably gave that thought before 'attacking' him.

Winslow?

After the nutty things he's done, he should be thanking the media. He's a soldier. No. His FATHER was a soldier. A true Hall of Famer.

Well he just chose to have micro-fracture surgery, so there's a pretty good chance his onfield days are numbered.

that's not entirely true, he came back from a nasty ACL tear to have one of the best receiving seasons for a TE ever last year

I agree about the professionalism part though

and about the 'soldier' comment, reaction difference, c'mon, it's Lebron James, the poster child of the NBA

One of my favorite non Cowboy games of all time. Other than the last play of the game what sticks in my mind ..... are the two teams leaving the field when it ended. One could truly say....every player on both teams left everything they had on the field that day.

What an amazing Game. One of those that help make the NFL what it is today.

I still remember one of those inflatable women stuck in the fishing net behind the uprights. Made quite an impression on me.

i loved Bob Kuchenberg, or however it's spelled, taking a shot at Winslow..."I have never allowed anyone to carry me off the field. I have had broken ankles...Act like a man and walk off the field."

Yikes.

That's pretty petty. Kuch never had to run all sorts of downfield routes for five hours in stifling humidity.

James said that??? Idiot... It was stupid when Winslow Jr. said it and it's stupid coming out of Lebron's mouth... Someone point those "soldiers" here.

Lebron doesn't have a reputation of going around making stupid comments and stupid off the field decisions, that's why KW Jr gets that pub, it's very similar to a player we have, but KW Jr's reputation is not up to his colossal level, and KW Jr hasn't done ANYTHING during his career yet. All in all, these guys bring it on themselves.;)

i myself was a soldier, and took no offense to what winslow jr said. its just a saying thats said alot. i bet you more then half the people that made a big deal out of it, never served either. so they should keep that high horse riding to themselves and shouldnt be quick to judge.

did winslow stick is foot in his mouth? probably. but was it a big deal? no

I respect your position LatinMind. However, I also served and spent months building bombs that were loaded onto buffs and quickly dropped onto Saddam's head back in 91. It doesn't really piss me off but it's just a lame thing to say. (IMHO) These guys need to take a field trip to spend some time with the troops over in the war and then they'll have a true impression of what being a "SOLJA!" is all about. Props to you for doing your part to support the good ol US of A.

I agree. It was probably the greatest non-Cowboys game I ever watched. I was a high school sophomore. The early game that day was Dallas over Tampa Bay 38-0 so I was in a great mood. I watched the Dallas game at my cousins house and his sister was upset that we wanted to watch the second game that day so I came back home to watch it. I'm glad I did rather than hanging around and doing whatever they ended up doing.

I heard the same things said from Marines to other Marines during the Viet Nam war. There's always someone who soldiered harder, nastier, yada.

I served in the Marines and Army and I don't think that saying means anything. It's just a saying. But I'd be quick to point out I don't have a Medal of Honor if somebody got offended about my soldiering. And I can see why someone may choose to be offended when a non-combatant says it.

My mother is the best soldier I've ever known.
