Oh no, did he just do that? He did it. He opened the gates to hell with all the Metalheads hanging out in this forum.

The first argument will be, of course, what constitutes Metal and differentiates it from Hard Rock? Some see Deep Purple, Led Zepp and Van Halen as Metal.

Mine is: From the only band it could be from, the inventors of the sound.

I'm not sure there is a greatest. There are so many that hit different benchmarks. I'd rather go with most influential and I'll probably catch flack for this choice, but I think I'd choose for possibly the most influential:
The Beatles "Helter Skelter"

Your bloodied body is what I cling to.
In powerful rain, they laid their heads to die.
Let your dark, thirsty eyes drink deep the sights of me.
It's sad that, in our blindness,
We gather thorns for flowers.
Your river holds a feast of danger.
The suffering you have had to bear.
I'd die for that moment one more time.
The loved one falls below your ideals.
Pleasure too safely enjoyed lacks zest.
The brave lick their sickening lips.
Rigid, handsome and a poet.
A king in his passionate castle.

The thread needs more DOOM METAL

It may sound like sacrilege but some of my favorite Black Sabbath songs are from Heaven and Hell. Don't get me wrong, I love Master of Reality, Paranoid and all the early albums but H&H was the ****!

Priest is another one of my favorites.

How could the list not include the first song on the first album released by one of the original Heavy Metal bands. I first listened to this song with headphones on in pitch black darkness after some indulgences. Never forget it!
