No question Norm is correct.
Landry had the best individual players, Jimma the best teams

And during the next dynasty, that team of the future could probably whip the current Cowboys
Cyclical.

Why ? they beat Dallas TWICE and then beat the Rams who beat us at HOME.
70's Steelers>Cowboys - 7 days a week & twice on Sunday's...

Because the 70's Cowboys lead the nfl in everything that decade except SB wins. They lead in wins, winning %, division titles, playoff appearances, playoff games, playoff wins, conference titles. They won 2 SB's in routes and lost 3 others in very close games. The 70's Cowboys were a great dynasty.

Only reason the Steelers beat us was pure luck- the Smith drop and a couple of big catches by over rated WRs. As has been pointed out, by any other measure we were better. STILL think the 71 team was the Greatest Cowboys Team. Greatest team of all time- going by each era- Bears in the 30s and 40s; Browns for the 50s; Packers for the 60s, Boys for the 70s, 49rs 80s, Boys 90s.

I'm not fan of Pitt but just as Dallas earned their SB titles Pitt earned theirs as well. When they needed to make plays they did and won.

I would agree that the Cowboys are the most successful franchise in the NFL.

Dallas has gone to more SB than any team with a record 8 and won 5.

I consider this an interesting retrospective:

11 points dismisses the 70's Cowboys as one of the greatest teams of all-time in some peoples' book; yet 9 points cements this century's Patriots as a dynasty in the minds of those same people.

Just saying.

You know me, I love my Cowboys, but you are what your record says you are. The Cowboys didn't win when it counted against the Steelers.

Just like Irvin was not held by Deion in 94. Or the last steelers SB "win".
The Boys DOMINATED in every single SB win. And barely lost 3.

Landry, in his book, said the reason they drafted Duane Thomas was because the Steelers were just a little stronger in the run game. They knew what kind of guy he was before they took him.

From what I remember (it was a long time ago), the Steelers had a little more talent on OL & LB. The Cowboys advantage was at QB, where, IMO, Staubach was the best, most clutch QB that ever played. If Staubach's career wasn't cut short by the Navy commitment and the NFL concussions, he would be a lot more prominently mentioned in the greatest of all time conversations. He didn't have the longevity to build up big career yardage and TD numbers, but when he played he was the brightest star in the sky. He only played eight full seasons--they went to the playoffs seven times, and the Super Bowl four. Here's a link: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/StauRo00.htm

Staubach struck fear in EVERY defense he played, including the Steelers. While people talk about Elway as a great come-from-behind QB, IMO, he couldn't touch Staubach. If the Cowboys were down less that 7 pts, everybody knew he would pull it out: the Cowboys, the opponents, the fans, heck, even the TV announcers knew he would do it.

For a good conversation, compare Staubach & Aikman. My take: Staubach is better based on scrambling and, especially, his ability to run a two-minute offense better. Aikman's arm strength and accuracy were better. I've always thought the two minute offense was the weakest part of Aikman's game.

While I like what Romo has done, it's a disservice to everyone involved when he's compared to those two guys. They did it in the playoffs against the best teams in the league. Romo is 0-1, and a disappointment in the playoffs so far. Beating up on bad teams does not make you a great QB. You pad the stats in the regular season, legends are built in the playoffs. While Romo may turn out to be a great QB, he doesn't have the track record now. Revisit that comparison in 7 years.

Could you reprint this specific passage of the book in its entirety because I'm not quite following the reasoning behind Thomas' drafting.

Thomas was a first round draft pick in 1970, which was before Noll's second season in Pittsburgh and after Noll's first 1-13 season in Pittsburgh. If I'm understanding this correctly, Landry was so immediately concerned with the Steelers' run defense (and, I guess, overall team), that he singled out Thomas' running back skills to counter their advantage? Is that correct or am I reading this wrong?

Man. I had not looked at the date of this original thread and I got to a post by Cbz40. It shocked me for a minute and brought back some good memories.
