Because the 70's Cowboys lead the nfl in everything that decade except SB wins. They lead in wins, winning %, division titles, playoff appearances, playoff games, playoff wins, conference titles. They won 2 SB's in routes and lost 3 others in very close games. The 70's Cowboys were a great dynasty.
Landry, in his book, said the reason they drafted Duane Thomas was because the Steelers were just a little stronger in the run game. They knew what kind of guy he was before they took him.
From what I remember (it was a long time ago), the Steelers had a little more talent on OL & LB. The Cowboys advantage was at QB, where, IMO, Staubach was the best, most clutch QB that ever played. If Staubach's career wasn't cut short by the Navy commitment and the NFL concussions, he would be a lot more prominently mentioned in the greatest of all time conversations. He didn't have the longevity to build up big career yardage and TD numbers, but when he played he was the brightest star in the sky. He only played eight full seasons--they went to the playoffs seven times, and the Super Bowl four. Here's a link:

Staubach struck fear in EVERY defense he played, including the Steelers. While people talk about Elway as a great come-from-behind QB, IMO, he couldn't touch Staubach. If the Cowboys were down less that 7 pts, everybody knew he would pull it out: the Cowboys, the opponents, the fans, heck, even the TV announcers knew he would do it.
For a good conversation, compare Staubach & Aikman. My take: Staubach is better based on scrambling and, especially, his ability to run a two-minute offense better. Aikman's arm strength and accuracy were better. I've always thought the two minute offense was the weakest part of Aikman's game.
While I like what Romo has done, it's a disservice to everyone involved when he's compared to those two guys. They did it in the playoffs against the best teams in the league. Romo is 0-1, and a disappointment in the playoffs so far. Beating up on bad teams does not make you a great QB. You pad the stats in the regular season, legends are built in the playoffs. While Romo may turn out to be a great QB, he doesn't have the track record now. Revisit that comparison in 7 years.
