The news of the league’s decision to suspend Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy couldn’t have come at a better time for the team. Sure, they along with their fans will be disappointed by the fact that he is initially scheduled to be out for 10 games, but that arbitrary number will more than likely be reduced after his appeal hearing. It seems odd that the league can suspend a player for that long when they were never found guilty of an actual crime, but they must understandably do whatever is necessary to protect their image and their product.

As far as the Cowboys are concerned, this lets them know that they need to make finding a pass-rushing defensive end a priority in next week’s NFL draft. They cannot
hope that their defense will overachieve like it did last year; you can only hope to catch lightning in a bottle once.

Having Rod Marinelli as your defensive coordinator helps and so does the fact that you have young and talented defensive line options like Demarcus Lawrence and Tyrone Crawford on your team, but they are far too young and inexperienced to fully rely on to carry the load next season. They need someone else to help draw the attention of the offense so that they can have the opportunity to win one-on-one battles and cause disruption in the backfield.

This is very reason why Jerry Jones went out and signed Hardy in the first place; he was supposed to provide a veteran presence on the line to help the youngsters learn the nuances of the game while at the same time drawing extra attention to himself throughout the game so that others could get pressure on the quarterback.

If Roger Goodell had waited until May to make this decision, the Cowboys might have settled for waiting until later on in the draft to select a defensive end who would be considered more of a two to three-year project versus that of an instant contributor from day one.

So this now increases their chances of moving up to select Owamagbe Odighizuwa out of UCLA or even Mario Edwards Jr. out of Florida State. And who knows, this may cause a ripple effect and may keep them from selecting a running back in the first round like Todd Gurley or Melvin Gordon.

Do not sleep on DE Henry Anderson from Stanford. If we miss out on Odiggy he would be a heck of a consolation choice.

Please explain how there is anything positive about a ten game suspension.

If Lawrence and Crawford are "far too young" to carry the load during Hardy's suspension, then how is a rookie going to help? If the Cowboys draft a pass rusher, it's for his long-term potential.

Took the words out of my mouth. What a dumb article.

I was thinking the same thing when I read that.

I know the media is still operating out of the 'old cowboys' model of Jerry making bad decisions but it has been clearly demonstrated for better part of 2 years that Stephan/McClay/Garrett/Marinelli have major input and have been making better decisions. I highly doubt Dallas is trading up for what is basically a 2nd round draft (after top 4 guys) on Thursday night. If anything Dallas trades down and accumulates picks.

Exactly. This is an article written on a poorly designated premise.

With the division games mostly up front in the season, and a suspension pending at the dominant defensive end (Hardy)...well, logic says that this position would swing strongly upward in the draft.

Don't forget our defensive line is going to go through OTAs, training camp and 4 pre-season games with Greg Hardy. His example and leadership will have a positive effect on our young guys before the regular season starts.

I wouldn't say this is the perfect time but it does offer an opportunity to plan around Hardy's possible absence. Now the appeal has time to be heard and acted upon before the season starts. Now the team can draft accordingly.

Yeah, I think the premise is a bit off base.

Learning of the length of the suspension before the draft gives us the ability to adjust accordingly, and if the full 10 games is observed it would at least give the rookie a lot of time to prepare and play in the mean time.

If we could get a catalytic defensive end in the draft, and you combine them with Lawrence, Mincey, and eventually Hardy.... That should result in some serious and consistent edge pressure.

I'm not really following the draft this year, so I don't know if a player like that exists who would be worth trading up for. I think trading up is incredibly risky, especially for a defense that needs a lot more help. We probably still need a 1 technique and we probably still need a cornerback. A safety wouldn't hurt either.

Trading up likely takes away from one of these positions, and then there is the chance for a bust ala Claiborne.

Approach this draft as if Hardy is not on the roster.
Approach every draft as if Greg Hardy (or anyone else) isn't on the roster. This idea that rookies are going to come in and make a huge impact in their first year, and that that's what the draft is for, is just nuts. I mean, it can happen, but the odds are always against it, and building your draft around specific positions is a great way to make sure it doesn't happen.

The Cowboys would still look to get defensive line help in a later round with the Hardy signing.
They are on a one year deal here. They know they will need more D line help in a year.
So why not get someone in the 3rd or 4th round.

I wouldn't mind Ray or Gregory at 27... anyone else (and that includes Owa) no thanks.
