The news of the league’s decision to suspend Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy couldn’t have come at a better time for the team. Sure, they along with their fans will be disappointed by the fact that he is initially scheduled to be out for 10 games, but that arbitrary number will more than likely be reduced after his appeal hearing. It seems odd that the league can suspend a player for that long when they were never found guilty of an actual crime, but they must understandably do whatever is necessary to protect their image and their product.
As far as the Cowboys are concerned, this lets them know that they need to make finding a pass-rushing defensive end a priority in next week’s NFL draft. They cannot
hope that their defense will overachieve like it did last year; you can only hope to catch lightning in a bottle once.
Having Rod Marinelli as your defensive coordinator helps and so does the fact that you have young and talented defensive line options like Demarcus Lawrence and Tyrone Crawford on your team, but they are far too young and inexperienced to fully rely on to carry the load next season. They need someone else to help draw the attention of the offense so that they can have the opportunity to win one-on-one battles and cause disruption in the backfield.
This is very reason why Jerry Jones went out and signed Hardy in the first place; he was supposed to provide a veteran presence on the line to help the youngsters learn the nuances of the game while at the same time drawing extra attention to himself throughout the game so that others could get pressure on the quarterback.
If Roger Goodell had waited until May to make this decision, the Cowboys might have settled for waiting until later on in the draft to select a defensive end who would be considered more of a two to three-year project versus that of an instant contributor from day one.
So this now increases their chances of moving up to select Owamagbe Odighizuwa out of UCLA or even Mario Edwards Jr. out of Florida State. And who knows, this may cause a ripple effect and may keep them from selecting a running back in the first round like Todd Gurley or Melvin Gordon.
