Not necessarily a knee-jerk due to today's disaster but a culmination of the first four games...
GROZ:
Grievance 1) We make the absolute worst QBs in the league looks like champs. We cannot get to the QB unless the coverage is so good that he has to eat it, like 6-7 seconds after the snap. It doesn't matter if we blitz 6 or 7 people, we still can't get to the QB unless the coverage is perfect. Roy Williams has been coached up so well by Zim that he went from nearly a ROY and perennial all-star to a very average DB and has gotten progressively WORSE in coverage. Has Roy made a game-changing-type play all year? I find myself wondering if he's even still in the game. He makes so few plays these days that every time he finally does he has to take a minute and celebrate.
Grievance 2) We have some absolute studs on defense. Zim is ruining their development. Half of our old defensive players that couldn't produce in Dallas were shipped off and many found new homes, some having more success. I've Ekubust play about 10 plays since he left Dallas and I've seen more sacks in those 10 plays than in all of his time here. Canty could become the best defensive player out of this draft, and Ware and Spears are freakishly talented also, but Zim is going to ruin their development.
Here's the other side of this, Washington has crap on defense yet they shut people down. Arrington isn't even playing, Taylor isn't great, who is their pass rusher? Heard of any of their LBs? The Pats have about 3 great players on their D yet they always win when they need to and have guys off the street playing DB and coming up with INTs. We have, top to bottom, better defensive players than over half the league, yet we give up 30 to the 69ers and make Collins, Brunell, and Rattay look like Manning, McNubb, and Brady. It's scheme folks. Some teams have talent, some have scheme. Scheme wins.
& P: stands for "and Payton"
Is there any way our play calling could be more predicable? We can't do anything unless we're so far behind we HAVE to throw the ball downfield. We insist upon running the ball straight ahead even if it doesn't net a yard for 3 quarters. We've turned JJ into a VERY average RB. Whether that's through playcalling predictability, him running more hesitantly, his offseason weight gain or teams loading up against him I don't know. But we should be able to get him close to 100 yards against these last two pathetic defenses. These last two defenses are about as bad as were gonna face all year.
