This was in the chat with Jim Jeffcoat:

Jim, You have coached them, what is the problem with the current
defense's inconsistent pass rush? (speedkilz88)

The D coordinator doesn't put them
in situation that heplps them win

I, and several others here, have been saying this for years but it is nice to hear someone on the "inside" say the same thing.

What people see in Zimrod is beyond me.

Hey, that's no way to talk about our next head coach

if Parcells has any problems with the way Zim is coaching this defense, don't you think he would have Zim tweak it, and/or have brought in someone else by now? we're what the 5th or 6th ranked defense in the league? Zim coaches a conservative, stop-the-run-and-prevent-the-big-play type of defense, which is just what Parcells prefers. Just deal with it...
Not too many of us think the offense shouldn't be opened up, too. We have pretty good talent on that side of the ball too. But I haven't seen nearly as many bashing our offensive coaches. Parcells runs a conservative offense, just as he does a conservative defense. We aren't all happy with it, but after we bring home the Lombardi, you won't be able to hear those voices over all the bells and whistleslll

Well, I heard D Woodson on ESPN radio last night saying Zimmer would be a great choice for a open college coaching HC job (Arizona State?) and said he would be perfect. He also went on to say how everyone should notice that BP kept ONLY Zimmer around and how he had ditched the rest of the coaches here when he arrived. He said BP kept zimmer because Zimmer knows football.

It's been reported before and admitted by Zinmmer and Parcells that they do not run an agressive 3-4 like Pittsburgh...

However, we've had a top 10 D all year and effectively shut down one of the best offenses of this decade...

And people are still amazed and point to Zimmer as if he's some sort of deficiency to this team...

We DON'T attack on purpose...We PLAY a certain defense...

I respect JJ, but these are the facts so if people ONLY look to sacks as some sort of gauge for how good this defense is, they're going to continue to be frustrated...

I wonder what the anti-Zimmer people thought about the defense after the Colts game?...

Or the defense after the 3 game road trip?...

The lack of pressure on Eli Manning really could have cost us the game. Even if we didn't blitz, if we could do something besides rush the same players from the same position on passing downs it might create a little confusion for the opposing offensive line. A line stunt or twist isn't necessarily a bad thing. The times that they did blitz from the MLB position Manning got happy feet and threw the ball away. If the Giants wouldn't have been short a starting WR and left tackle we really would have had our hands full.

I understand and believe that Jefcoat sees that. What I'm wondering is who's doing it?

Jefcoat was speaking of the current defense. That might very well be dictated by Parcells, not Zim. Parcells could be telling Zimmer to pull back, to send Ware into coverage, to not blitz, to not stunt, etc., because he doesn't want blown coverages or to take many chances.

With a relative hole at FS (C'mon Parrish) Big Bill might be saying I'd rather have an eight yard completion with average pressure than have a blitz fail and give up half the field.

Is that it? I have no idea... but it is very possible. Zimmer was pretty aggressive back in 02 when he sent guys often. I don't know why he'd pull back now, with a better squad built for pressure... unless the HOF head coach is telling him to.

Look... I'm no Zimmer lover and I'd just as soon see a new guy come in... I like change at the coordinator positions unless you have a star coach, and stability at the head coach, unless he's a lame HC. However, to lay the blame at the feet of Zimmer when we have a head coach as controlling as Bill, is purely speculation.

The D we played in that game is not the same D, they let the players loose so to speak, see how much pressure we got on manning?

Agreed...

I was at the game and it was frustrating as hell watching Eli back there with so much time...

However, I have to believe that Zimmer et. al know what they're doing as they've kept teams to around 20 points/game AND covered up a glaring weakness in the secondary...

I'd like to see more blitzing or creating more confusion but this defense is vastly improved from last year in a lot of different areas...

Parrish MAY possiby allow the team to attack more with a LB or RW as they'll have confidence in the secondary and man coverage...

That might be the kind of D we'll see in the Playoffs. May be BP is just holding Zimmer off to save that kind of D in the playoffs. We shall see.

That is part of it. We are not aggressive because of the scheme.

We run a 3-4 Read and react two gap defense. I dont know how long it will take the common fan to realize this and stop complaining.

Part of the reason we have had no pass rush is because we have not been blitzing and actually have been playing 2 man under and cover 2 looks almost every week.

People are obsessed with the sack, and rightfully so no play can turn the game faster than a sack. However we are playing a defense that is stopping everyone but the giants running game and then making teams drive the field. Early on in the year we gave up an abundance of big plays and now those have dissapeared and we have become a top 5 defense.

Its hard to move the ball the length of the field on us, its hard to run on us and when teams are forced to throw underneath we have tackled well and used our speed and size to make plays.

Some people just dont get it, We do not run zone blitzes and stunts every down like pittsburgh and san diego, they run a different 3-4.

Parcells 34 defenses have always played the way ours does now, the difference was in NY he had taylor, one of the three best players in the history of the league and teams didnt know how to block him yet, so they got their bringing 3 or 4.

in New England they also played very similar. It is a scheme that requires big smart guys who do not blow assignments.

As we have seen the past 5 weeks when our guys dont blow assignments qbs and running backs are struggling. Just because it does not come by way of sack does not mean someone is doing a poor job.

Marcus spears and demarcus ware on their tuesday night radio show's have repeatedly said we run the most difficult defense to play, it is all about stopping the run and then reactiing. Not just getting up the field on the snap like some teams teach.

So again, 3-4 read and react two gap defense.

and for more proof, Troy Aikman has said repeatedly that when he played against parcells defense with the giants and patriots and jets they did not do anything exotic, he knew exactly what they were doing and where the guys would be then said the difference is he always has big smart guys who do not screw up the play and it makes it hard to drive the length of the field. And of course he also said against the giants, they could rush four or five and taylor and banks were unblockable and would come free, they were just extremely talented.

If u have an effective O... decent talent on D... you are going to force teams into mistakes if they play from behind!!!

I like a D that can make negative plays when they want...the Boys cant do this!!! I dont hink anyone is asking for an all out Blitz every play.... But I would like to know when the Boys need a stop they can stop a team by Blitzing and not hoping for them to make a mistake!!!

I like Zim, but I dont like the development of our players... Does Canty even have 1 Blocked pass in his career? the guy is frickin 6-7 with a wing spand of Ben Wallace even if he cant get to the QB he should be disrupting the Passing lanes!

do we need to bring up Bobby Carpenter?

sad

I am curious how many sacks do you think is a good season, or a great season for a cowboys season?

I respectfully disagree Mont17...

Statistically, we're ranked 4th overall in takeaways which is significantly better than last year...

That means we are forcing teams into mistakes...

And the fact is interceptions were dropped by Glenn and James during the Giants game. No coach can make that play it has to be the players. The defensive game plan got them in position to get turnovers, the dynamics of the play caused the interceptions to be missed.

This stuff is just getting really old.

If Parcells did not want Zimmer here he would be gone, fact that he is here and Dallas ranks fairly high in points allowed (6th) it would appear the only problem is with fans. Too many look at 1 stat and that is sacks well there are few teams with a lot more sacks than Dallas and do not have near the defensive production as the Cowboys have shown this season. Saints are one of them, yes they sack the QB but they can't stop the run. GB is another they can get sacks but the defense is a joke. Like anyone I would love to see more sacks but not at the expense of being overly aggressive and allowing teams to kill us on the ground.

Let me just say this. For all the whining that goes on in this forum.

I believe 93 to have been a very good defense.

That team gave up 1651 yards rushing, recorded 34 sacks and allowed 3347 yards passing.

Our team this year has given up 1084 yds rushing, recorded 22 sacks and allowed 2381 yards passing, and this is in a passing league.

So I think people need to step back and look and see that this defense is playing very well.

Now obviously we would all like to see a season like 94 which had 47 sacks or 1966 which had 60 sacks, yea thats right 60 sacks....those were unofficial stats in 1960 because it was not an official stat then. It is in the cowboys media guide however.

So I think it is safe to say our defense is playing well, we need more turnovers but we are a +6 for the year, with 14 interceptions.
