Gruden says he’d like to give coaching “one more try”Posted by Mike Florio on October 26, 2013, 3:46 PM EDT

Getty ImagesIn Saturday’s one-liners, we pointed out that former Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden referred to one of the Glazers (we’re not sure which one — possibly Jay) as a “son of a *****” during an Ocala speaking engagement.

Lurking on the second page of the story (as spotted by the folks at ***FAKE-NEWS-SOURCE***.com) was a more interesting comment.

I would like to give coaching one more try,” Gruden said.

Gruden has made similar remarks in the past, but it’s becoming likely that he’ll ditch the ESPN broadcast booth for the sidelines sooner rather than later, especially since this is his fifth season out of the game. With so many of his former assistants already under contract with the Cowboys, speculation has persisted that Gruden could replace Jason Garrett in Dallas.

Regardless of the destination, Gruden’s leverage could peak after the coming season, given the success of his former colleague in Green Bay, Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Reid has thrived a season after being booted by the Eagles, and the turnaround in Kansas City will make all members of the Fired Football Coaches Association more attractive, including the founder of the group.

As the 2013 season continues to unfold, the question becomes whether Gruden will reiterate his commitment to ESPN (possibly via another contract extension that likely allows him to leave for coaching at any time) or whether he’ll make it clear that his FFCA hat is back in the ring.

Either way, it could make for some awkward production meetings in November and December with coaches he’ll potentially be replacing or competing with in 2014.

I don't think Chucky's gonna get lucky in Dallas. RHG will be here for at least another year, probably more, IMO.

Anybody consider the possibility that he could replace Coughlin in NY?

He can give TB another shot. We have our coach.

Yeah I could actually see him going back to TB. They are way too talented to be winless right now. Martin, V. Jackson, Revis, Nicks, and a good D-Line...they have the surrounding pieces if they could just get a franchise QB. Not saying that Glennon won't be; the future holds that answer.

Awesome.

The guy was successful and has the offensive knowledge to fix Romo's inability to get over mediocre play in big games.

Yes..Callahan, Kiffin and Marinelli would be an outstanding staff to let Gruden begin with.

My overall feeling has been jones has been interested in him but has agreed to let Garrett have this last season to try his way.

There is no way Garrett gets another season unless they win the division and at least one playoff game.

That even may not be enough if Gruden becomes available.

Schiano is getting crucified here as the second coming of Saban or Petrino to the NFL. He's been stuck with a average QB with a good arm and his staff can't adapt and adjust. Sound familiar? I'm hearing fans would like to see Lovie in Tampa and a new O coordinator.

Sounds like Garrett will be here next season because we're winning the division and a playoff game. Barring long term injuries to key players it's fairly evident that the defense is going to get better as the season rolls along. The big question is on offense, and with the emergence of T-Will and Beasley I think the offense will improve as well.

Not true... This is Jerry's home grown guy. He will get another year no matter what happens this season.

I hope so...this team is starting to look good. Lots of young guys on the team doing the best they can, and it looks pretty damn good from where I sit.

Also, this coaching change crap after three years over and over again does nothing to help continuity for build a team long term...it's just starting all over again! Then in three years if the Cowboys new coach does not win three SB's, chang the coach!

Do not want Gruden any more than I would want Switzer or any other coach that won a Super Bowl with someone else's team.
