Guards effect on the Center

The Cowboys drafted Tyron Smith 9th overall. Doug Free was a 4th round pick (#122). The Cowboys and Rams both drafted their OTs in a very similar fashion, and both drafted blue-chip offensive tackles in the top 10. Moreover, the Cowboys have taken a page out of the Rams' playbook in the interior offensive line, too.

I think the Cowboys have significantly improved both guard spots on paper (Nate Livings, Mackenzy Bernadeau, and Ronald Leary). Ronald Leary is lurking, and he could win the starting RG job, imo. Leary is the prototype offensive guard that the Cowboys need, imo. These three players should be very significant upgrades over the 2010 versions of Kyle Kosier and Leonard Davis. Furthermore, Livings, Bernadeau, and Leary should be very significant upgrades over Nagy/Holland/Dockery and Kosier.

I'm sure the young offensive line will need some time to gel, but I see enough talent in the offensive line to win, especially with the upgrades at both guard spots and by flipping the blue-chip Tyron Smith and Doug Free. The Cowboys should have won the NFC East last year, but they gave it away (Jets, Lions, Patriots, Cardinals, Giants). Phil Costa was the starting center last year, too.

If the Greatest Show on Turf could win a Super Bowl and go to another one while starting two different undrafted free agents at center, then surely the Cowboys can compete at a high level in the NFC East and challenge for a division title. I think that should be expected of them for sure.

The Eagles started a rookie 6th round pick last year at center. The Giants started free agent David Bass last year. The Commanders started Will Montgomery last year and re-signed him to a very modest deal. The Cowboys will most likely start Phil Costa again this year, and he will have a year of experience under his belt. I think that can only help him. Costa is a decent run blocker, too.

Center sure doesn't look like the position or positions that will decide this division. It sure didn't decide the NFC East last year. That is for sure.

really? And the O line did not get Romo roughed up and only score 5 TDs on the ground all season long and could not get a third and one if their life depended on it.

And center was the weak point of the line.

Yeah it made no difference at all. You do realize how close we came to winning the division, right?

And why don't you look at the league as a whole and then look at the best players.

Guess what most of them were drafted in the top 3-4 rds.

Relying on 6th and 7th rd picks and UDFA's is STUPID.

SHOW over the last 10 years where the Boys have developed any single O Lineman who was drafted lower than 4th?

We have not.

One definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results.

Look at the players that have done best with the boys over the last 10 years on the O line.

LA- 2nd rd pick
Hotel- 2nd pick
Gurode- 2nd Rd pick
Free- 4th rd pick
Colombo was a 1st rd pick for the Bears
Tyron 1st Rd Pick

not sure where Kosier was originally chosen; think he was late round.

So look at that evidence then tell me we should rely on late rd picks and UDFA's.
