Don't get me wrong....love the player. But we are talking about breaking the bank for an offensive guard. I'm having my doubts they should go forward w/ this extension. Think the money could be better spent else where...

Oy.

I really don't understand why we would try to extend him this year when he is scheduled to make 2.5 million. Next year is the year to do it IMO.

It's an extension to the current contract. They aren't tearing it up.

no need to commit another 25-30m guaranteed 2 years early........ don't forget JRatliff or the chance of a catastrophic injury..... he can't go anywhere so why risk it

Yeah, I don't see the rush. I do think it is a nice gesture by the Cowboys and makes the negotiations much easier to do it a year before he hits the market but 2 years just does not make any business sense to me. The only reason would be to take cap hit when you can afford it but if you can carry excess forward, I just don't see it.

Only reason I could see if it was a huge discount.......if Martin took TFred money 6/57m then OK, lock him up

What about signing him now to a 7-8 year extension for the simple reason of avoiding contract inflation? The term is key, much like TSmith's. Sign him till 2024, now, and he'll be underpaid around 2020, is my thinking.

Either way, he ain't going anywhere. I just want a long term contract.

I would always slow roll a huge extension unless getting a big discount

the more info the better and guys get hurt all the time

The Ratliff, MBarber and RW11 extensions were DOA before they even started

I wouldn't hesitate at giving Zack a 7/8 year deal. Ratliff, MB3, and RW11 aren't in the same stratosphere as Martin, and two of those positions (RB, WR) don't age well, unlike OG.

If they wait until 2018 the agent is not only going to want more money he's also only going to commit to a five year deal like most free agents sign instead of a 6 year deal that favors the Cowboys.
