I decided to do a little more research on this guy and I found this little optimistic article written before the draft which I felt some might find interesting.

In a running back class that is being heralded as the deepest and most talented since 2008, it was inevitable that this would happen.
As we climb over ourselves to settle the Todd Gurley versus Melvin Gordon debate, or try to make sense of the tier behind them,1 there’s something else happening here: very talented running backs are slipping through the cracks.
Enter Stephen F. Austin (SFA) running back Gus Johnson, who had a terrific career for the Lumberjacks and quietly earned a Combine invite (spoiler: that's a big deal). Let’s explore why this small-school runner could be the perfect lottery ticket for NFL and dynasty GMs alike.

He's going to really have to showcase his skills big time in preseason. I don't know if he can leapfrog Dunbar for the 3rd spot snd I doubt we carry 4 running backs

You'll get to see a lot of him in Thursday's preseason game.

They can just keep him on the practice squad. He would have to do something spectacular in the preseason games in order for another team to want to sign him to their 53 considering that all teams could have signed him up until the Cowboys signed him a couple of weeks ago.

my opinion is that leapfrogging Dunbar will not really be all that hard to do. I would not be surprised at all to see Dunbar cut by end of training camp. I think Dallas is in fact auditioning for his replacement

As long as the replacement is also strong on special teams. We already lost Harris, so they're scrapping to find people replace his four ST positions. Losing Dunbar would make it worse in that regard.

It's definitely not impossible for this guy to make it. If DMC and Dunbar continue to get banged up, one of them will be let go for this Lumberjack.

Depending of course on how he does in these preseason games. He's getting a big opportunity, hopefully he's able to take advantage. We could very well see a surprise addition to the RB committee after Thurs. night.

If he pops of a few big runs against the 1's, i'll be impressed.
If he pops of a few big runs against the 2's, i'll be intrigued.
If he pops of a few big runs against the 3's, i'll be unexcited.

You can bet he'll get an instant following if he delivers bigtime Thursday night. The story line of his success, alone and of itself, would be an intriguing one to read and rejoice in. It's always great to see someone come through the ranks from nowhere and find success. Ahem -- OK, so I'm getting ahead of myself. Can't help it.
