Would JJ still be the meddling hold a weekly press conference every week owner he is today. Or would things be different. I'm not trying to be a smart arse just wondering.

There is nothing wrong with this question. It IS something that has allowed Jerry to continue to meddle and hire puppet coaches. He feels he can still get it done via those methods. Big difference is that the team has been there twice before. The team won IN SPITE of Jerry/Switzer.

We should have lost that SuperBowl. We were getting schooled in the 2nd half. It was the tale of two games. The first half(we dominated), the 2nd half(the Steelers were poised to beat us).
Thank you Neil and Larry.

Jerry doesnt get it. He is entering the Al Davis Zone....

I'm not sure what winning super bowl xxx has to do with a weekly press conference this year.

An interesting compare/contrast study will some day be done on DS/JJ. JJ came in, had immediate success, and because of it, has strayed very little from his basic belief that he can control the team.
DS on the other hand has never had success, and because of that has been trying every trick in the book (short of giving up complete control) and it has left us looking horrible.
The question for the long term is: will the lack of early success lead DS to give up control, or will the early success of JJ lead to a better situation for the cowboys.

(i would prefer to have had early success, because at the rate we are going, DS may never find his way out of the cellar)

Why would a comparison be done?

Jerry Jones has 3 Super Bowls.

Daniel Snider on the other hand....

The really sad thing here for Cowboys fans is:
  • Before you know it, it will be 20 years without winning a thing
  • We will have wasted Romo, Witten, Ware's career

pretty simple really:

JJ: meddling football idiot who thinks he knows talent, hasnt won anything in 12 years
DS: meddling football idiot who thinks he knows talent, hasnt won anything meaningful

not so hard to make the connection

If you take into account the overall resume of both owners, clearly Jerry Jones will go down as the better owner.

There are some similarities, but Jerry Jones is a much better owner than Daniel Snider.

Some how I doubt winning the Superbowl in 1995 changed anything. It gave him the ability to beat his chest and crow about being right when it came to anyone coaching that team (and I use coaching very lightly in regards to Switzer) to a Superbowl.

Had we not won it just means we'd now be even longer since winning a Superbowl cause Jerry isn't going to change.

sure, we all say that JJ is a poor GM and a great owner but consider this:

take any successful owner in the NFL, what is the main/primary decision the owner has to make to ensure the success of his franchise?

he has to hire the right GM and then the GM has to make the right decisions on coaches, players etc.

now answer 3 simple questions:

1. how many teams in the NFL would hire JJ as their GM given his "great" resume AS A GM? just a number will do. no need to explain or embellish, just let me know, considering his "great" resume how many NFL teams would take him as GM? if the answer is "0", then you know that JJ has failed not only as GM but also as owner because he has hired and has continued to support a failed GM.

another question:

2. if you were the owner of an NFL team, would you hire JJ as your GM?

3. if it were any other GM who had not won anything in 12 years, would JJ have fired him?

simple questions really.
it is not that complicated.

Its is simple. No team owner would hire Jerry as GM. None, nobody, zero, zilch... nada.

Seriously? That is exactly the comparison I was referring too:
One had early success, hence the 3 SB titles. But many fans and unbiased observers would acknowledge that nothing JJ did directly brought those titles to the Cowboys. His winning though did affect how he views his role in the organization. He owns it, he GMs it, they won 3 SB's that way, why change it.

One had early failure, hence the other hand. Again, everyone sees that DS' meddling and influence has done more to negatively impact the team then to build a perennial winner (which is the goal for both teams). And without the early success to fall back on, he has gone through multiple levels of ways of trying to build a winner. (without success).

The compare/contrast aspect comes in when you realize both owners have the same goal: to field a perennial championship caliber team; and how both owners have dealt with not achieving the ultimate goal, (and in the process going 10 years without a division title, or x number of years without a playoff win.) Both owners have many characteristics the same, and I have no doubt that had DS won even one SB, he would have proclaimed himself Lifetime GM, but instead, they had a different start, and now, at this point both have gone way to long without that success and both are struggling to find the way to make it work for their franchise.

As I said, it is interesting to me.

While true, there's probably some GM's of other teams nobody else would hire either.

For instance how many teams would have REALLY considered Matt Millen for any role? None that I know of ever did, except Detroit.

I'm sure there are others, just dont have time to do the research.

I will say I firmly believe that alot of people blow this "Jerry is GM" stuff WAY out of proportion. Anybody that really believes he makes all the decisions or even has MOST of the input is probably delusional IMO. What Jerry wants is the CREDIT, therefore he exaggerates his role anytime he gets the chance.

I'm sure he has some input, probably more than some owners who turn everything over to someone else to do it, but the idea that he is actually a true GM isnt accurate IMO.

He's made a few boneheaded decisions. His hiring of Switzer, Gailey and Campo were pathetic. People bash him for some trades, but trading for Joey Galloway at the time wasnt a bad idea. Did he overpay somewhat? Yeah maybe, but there was probably going to be a bidding war for the guy anyway. Galloway at the time was the 2nd most dominant playmaking WR in the league along with Moss, and thats what the team needed. Nobody had any idea that Aikman's career was gonna be cut short or that the team would tank immediately after that.

While he should be bashed for the above, he should get some credit for hiring Jimmy, Parcells and even Wade. His rationale behind hiring Wade was sound, he wanted an elite 3-4 defensive coach to make our average defense dominant and maximize the return on the investments made on the defensive side of the ball. He did have previous head coaching experience and had coached teams (lesser teams than the one he inherited here too IMO) to the playoffs.

Again, I am not one of these ultra Jerry apologists, but I believe he gets alot of undue criticism from time to time and I do believe he isnt a "true GM" either. He says he is publicly, but I think he relies on input from the others more than his own.
