TODD HALEY’S STAR IS RISING?

At a time when many league observers suspect that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could demote coach Wade Phillips to the recently-vacated position of defensive coordinator and then hire a new head coach, the speculation centers on guys like Mike Shanahan and Jon Gruden.
But what about Todd Haley?
He spent three years with the Cowboys as a member of Bill Parcells’ staff, as receiver coach and passing
game coordinator. Haley left two years ago to become the offensive coordinator in Arizona, and he’s catching plenty of excellent publicity and praise as the Cardinals continue one of the most stunning postseason runs in NFL history.
It’s the kind of story that Jones could find very intriguing.
Then again, bringing Haley back likely would entail dumping receiver
Terrell Owens. Haley and Owens had a problem in 2006,
ultimately resulting in discipline being imposed against Haley, presumably for talking out of school regarding an incident between Haley and Owens.
The spat prompted Owens to declare publicly that his relationship with Haley had been ruined.
“There will be no more friendly nothing because I don’t trust anybody like that,” Owens said. “I will go out and practice hard. I will respect him as a coach, and he should respect me as a player. Anything outside of that I am not going to be able to deal with. Right now, we are merely coworkers, and that’s it.”
But given Haley’s work with a certain receiver wearing No. 11 in Arizona and the presence of a certain underutilized receiver wearing No. 11 in Dallas for whom Jones gave up multiple draft picks, maybe Jones will do what he has to do to get Haley, even if it means bidding adieu to T.O.
It would give Jones the ultimate pretext for dumping Owens. The owner could explain that he’s not admitting failure with Owens, but that the franchise is making a long-term decision at head coach, and recognizing that they’re hiring a head coach with whom Owens can’t co-exist.
Even if it doesn’t happen in Dallas, can anyone explain how in the hell Haley didn’t get even a sniff for any of the other jobs that were filled this year, and those that are still vacant?
