Was Hanna free to try and return the onside kick once he caught it? If so, he was never touched and then flipped the ball to the official, which I thought made the ball live for anyone to recover. Seems like at one time they had a rule that an onside kick could not be returned. Even Joe or Troy mentioned they thought it was a live ball. Your thoughts.

I've never seen anyone even try to return an onside kick. Covering up the ball is just too important. What's the rule? Does anybody know? I don't necessarily trust Joe Buck's take on it.

even if your not tackled, if you give yourself up by either falling to the ground or i assume staying on the ground, then you are tackled. he definately made no attempt to get up at first and given the situation, the ref probably blew the whistle.

Randall Williams caught one on the fly.

I think once a player goes to the ground and "gives himself up", the play is dead.

Randal Williams did it against the Eagles for a TD.

We returned an onside kick for a td against the eagles a few years ago....I think it was randall williams.

The kicking team can't advance the ball (unless fumbled), the receiving team can.

The play had been whistled dead for exactly 7 seconds before Hanna tossed the ball to the ref, probably because the ref requested it.

Whistle started blowing here:

Regardless, in that situation I'm certainly glad he didn't try to advance it.

The blew the whistle immediately. Well before he flipped it to the official.

Non-issue.

Other than the issue that the official probably shouldn't have blown the whistle immediately.

The refs blew the whistle the moment he hit the ground. He got up like he was thinking about running but the whistle had already been blown.

Was discussing that with my Son during the game. Actually, the ref should not have blown the whistle. The clock should have kept running.
