Has a head coach ever been fired before he coached his first game?

I listen to Josh McDaniels and I think he looks overmatched and has not helped the Cutler situation.

I saw his interviews on NFLN about an hour ago and was thinking the same thing (not about him getting fired). I don't think he knows what he's doing yet.

Except I thought Kiffin usually handled himself very well. He just worked for a lunatic.

I almost see some of that very undeserved Charlie Weis arrogance in McDaniels.

He certainly looks like he is in over his head. Since his introduction as HC of the Donkeys, I have not been impressed once. Maybe it will all work out. But this Cutler thing doesn't look like it will have a pretty ending.

Good call.

It wasn't in the NFL but George O'Leary was fired from ND before he coached a game.

Not sure if a coach has ever been fired before he coached a game, but:

Bill Belicheat quit before he ever coached a game for the Jets.

And

Tony Banks got fired as the starting QB before he ever took a regular season snap. :D

Didn't Parcells bail on the Bucs to take the Cowboys job?

No, he backed out of the Bucs job in 2002, but when he joined the Cowboys in 2003 they threw a hissy fit over it if I remember correctly.

making a mistake by not trading Cutler.

If Bowlen was going to comitt to McDaniels, then he should do so 100%. Cutler could be more valuable as a trading commodity than as disgruntled employee not believing in the plan his boss is trying to implement.

I'd move Cutler to the 49ers for their #1 pick, Vernon Davis ( whom the 49ers wouldn't mind getting rid of ), and a conditional #1 pick in '10 ( conditional on his playing time and production ), draft Sanchez at #10, draft Aaron Maybin as pass rushing LB for the new 3-4 defense at #12, and start the rebuilding process from scratch.

I believe in McDaniels' " no one is bigger than the team " concept that he learned in New England and I think he could do it if given the chance.

Why would the Broncos want Davis? He's another player that thinks he's bigger than the team, and he's already had past disagreements with his HC. Plus McDaniels already has experience with Graham from New England and Sheffler is a pretty good young TE as well.

No problem, also

Finally found an article about it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/01/sports/pro-football-if-parcells-coaches-bucs-want-damages.html?n=Top%2FReference%2FTimes%20Topics%2FPeople%2FP%2FParcells%2C%20Bill

Bill Parcells never coached a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game and never took a dollar from the team. He gave them nothing but agita when he suddenly backed out of a four-year deal last January.

''We lost some credibility that we worked very hard to get,'' Tampa Bay's general manager, Rich McKay, said at the time. ''We'll get it back.''

Given Parcells's lack of contribution to the Buccaneers, does the team deserve compensation if the Dallas Cowboys sign him, as is expected? Or is Tampa Bay's motivation solely revenge?

The Bucs think they are entitled to compensation, and have asked the National Football League office for just that. The league will hold a hearing tomorrow, during which Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will determine the validity of the contract that Tampa Bay said Parcells signed and determine if his signing by Dallas constitutes damages.
For a team that just won a SB with the Coach they ended up with, they were acting like a bunch of babies IMO.

I think, more than anything, what Davis needs is a change of scenary. I think his problems are more of the personal issues with Singletary than anything else. The guy has the physical abilities to be another Shannon Sharpe, probably better, and that's something Sheffler could never be. He'd be the perfect down field threat as a TE for McDanields offense. And Graham would be the perfect mentor.

Call me crazy, and I'm not a Cutler(fat crybaby), but I think this mess in Denver gets straight and Cutler will be a better QB for the Broncos.

Maybe all this stuff was a ploy to light a fire under Cutler's rear.
