Has a team ever accomplished this?

Your chances depend on how soon Romo can get back and if he is ready when he gets back. Not to mention Randall getting his head into the game in the second half.

Lost their all star QB and major other pieces for what's going to be 8-10 games and recovered to win SB when all/most returned?

I ask because I called it for us this year. Romo wins us SB as SBmvp.
I just want to know my chances.

The Pats won 11 games in 2008 with Cassel as the starter that season. Oddly, 11 games was not enough to get them in the playoffs.

GB didn't lost their QB, but they did lose 18 players to injury in their last Super Bowl season.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins went 17-0.
During the 1972 season, Bob Griese’s ankle was broken in Week 5.
Griese returned to the field as a substitute during the AFC Championship game versus thePittsburgh Steelers and then started for Miami in Super Bowl VII.

Would it matter either way if one did?

One could either latch on to the statistical outlier or rely on the lack of precedence to console themselves.

To answer, the question directy, I do not think any team has lost their QB and their all world WR and did much thereafter.

The teams that lost their QB, had a run game to lean on for the most part.

We of course, do not.

This is just going to be a bumpy ride. Either we come out on the other side okay or we do not.

I will be watching for sure. But one eye will be squinted or outright closed.

That was an all-timer running team with a great defense. No such luxuries here.

Jeff Hostetler won it with the Giants. He was, in fact, a pretty good QB.

Back in the pre-cap era teams could draft good QBs and they'd be stuck playing backup for much if not all of their careers.

Another question worth asking might be: has replacing a backup with another backup during such a stretch ever worked?

I remember Steve Bono replaced Young (injury) in 1991 and the 49ers went 5-1 during that time. Though technically Young was the starter that year, certainly at that point in time Montana was definitely the long term starter and Young was the backup.

Bill Parcells had a strong running game and a good defense.

I think we "could" have that, but we have not so far. That is the real issue.

Matt Cassel or any backup QB is not going to win games. It will take huge efforts in other areas.

The only real drawback is that we have a shaky OL leading a bunch of mentally weak RBs and a defense that really does not even know what it can do right now thanks to unfamiliarity.

What we saw last week was individual talent being unleashed. It will take more than that for the defense to become dominant.

If the rest of the team and the offensive structure were trustworthy, I would start worrying about this.

I expect things to be the same or similar with Cassel.

If I ran the team, I would tear it all down offensively, use one of my padded practices up and load up the running game.

That is where we know there is some chance of success.

Your bringing up Parcells did make me think of one, though... kinda similar situation. Ray Lucas. But as you alluded to, this is no Parcells-style team and there's no Curtis Martin here.

Best case scenario....weeden goes 0-3 (check). Cassel goes 3-3.....romo comes back to a 5-6 team and loses his first game back (knocks the rust off and gets all of the haters riled up that it didn't matter if Romo came back because we will never win a SB). Romo then wins 4 straight to get us into the playoffs as a wild card team. Romo then goes on to beat the Giants, the Seahawks, and Packers to get to the SB where he throws 5 TDs to beat the Patriots and is the SB MVP. Romo is overheard after the game telling Brady with a wink and smile thanks for playing.

A guy can dream can't he?

Despite what everyone thinks based off of last year, I have no question that Garrett and Linehan are NOT running by nature coaches.

They do not believe in it.

They might publically say they do, periodically, based on situation, but overall the Gillman/Coryell derivatives are not running based, have never been running based and never will be running based.

We experienced something pretty special last season. Things just clicked.

The OL was great, Murray knew how to run behind it. Perfect storm. No question.

Sometimes when coaching, if things keep happening, you get out of the way and let the players be.

There is no doubt this team was in a groove offensively.

The idea was to take that philosophy and move forward, never minding the fact that we eliminated Murray and his role in the chemistry of the perfect storm.

A good scenario, but it has some flaws in it. But, " A guy can dream can't he" is something I can believe in.

Well if it has not been done, there is a first time for everything.
For now I will take a win against the Giants, and if that happens, I will feel good about the chances of getting a win over Seattle and / or Philly, being at home for those 2 games. And if that happens, or 2 or 3, then we should be able to beat TB.

The D will need to play like we want them to play though. But need the win against the Gianrs to start it off right.
Even if we just win 2 of the next 4, it keeps us at 4-5 for Romo to return.
Not sure where someone got 5-6.

Idk if anything like it has ever been accomplished but I'm one that thinks it's our destiny to win it all this year. Even after all these injuries. Maybe the injuries are just stacking up the obstacles for us to ultimately overcome.

I mentioned this before. Murray was so successful it seems like it almost forced Garrett to run.
I don't think we will see that dedication to the run again.
