Hatcher tied with Watt as PFF's top 3-4 DE this season

And Cowboys could have had a line up featuring Hatcher and Watt at DE and Rat in the middle with Ware coming off the edge. That could have been the next generation of Doomsday.

Unfortunately Dallas had needs on the offensive line as well. They got a good player in T. Smith. They would have got a good player in Watt, too, but then would have nothing at left tackle. You couldn't go wrong with either player and you were going to be left wanting no matter which one you picked.

I don't think anyone would be rueing if we picked JJ Watt. Tyron Smith is a very nice player but he's not JJ Watt. Not quite Ellis over Moss, but the divide is still significant. Watt is the BEST at his position, a Defensive Player of the Year and multiple pro bowler in his extremely short career.

People would be yelling "why don't they fix the offensive line". People complain about Doug Free. If they didn't draft Smith, Free would be on the left side. That is a scary thought.

And yet despite Watt's defensive presence, his team went 2-14 last year.

Ahh the old darned if you don't darned if you do narrative for Jerry and Co.

Go with the younger cheaper higher upside option and get panned week 3.

Remember when everyone was openly cheering the front office when Hatcher was knicked up for the Commanders in the off-season?

You reap what you sow Jerry.

Very very very few cowboy fans are unhappy with how the cowboys FO handled hatcher

Please check your agenda at the door

Lets see how that holds up when the skins havent played half their games against cupcakes. Id like the cowboys to still have hatcher, but lets be realistic.

LOL, this is your argument for Smith over Watt? Not only do you completely disregard Watt's individual accomplishments (in 3 years has 37 sacks, DMVP, best D player in league past 3 years) but you completely misrepresent Texans record/success since acquiring Watt. Texans have not only won their division TWICE and have TWO playoff wins, that's DOUBLE the number of playoff wins that Dallas has had in last 19 years. Ruminate on that while you pat yourself on back attesting our 8-8 records is the result of Smith.

The pro Smith contingent is really reaching when they have to cherry pick an aberration like 2013 to support picking Smith over Watt. And the Texans offense was completely decimated in 2013 but blame that on Watt. SMH

It's not that we didn't re-sign Hatcher, it's that we were handcuffed by poor past contracts tying up the salary cap. Who knows, even if we had more cap room it will still take a couple years to know if re-signing Hatcher would have been a smart investment. Right now, it looks like it would have been.

Don't you think you are doing a bit of ignoring Cowboys issues in your own screeds? Worst defense in the league, hammered by injuries and the team goes 8-8. But it is okay for the Texans to have issues on offense, and them go 2-14 after a great season before? Despite having the best defensive player in the league?

I said nothing to denigrate Watt. He's a great player, fully deserving of every accolade he's gotten. The Cowboys staff was apparantly wise enough that the choice was between the potential at Left Tackle and Defensive Tackle/End in that draft. Hopefully we'll be able to see that matchup in a game soon. Should be pretty interesting. Though I bet they try to isolate Watt on Free. Which would be a pretty telling point, don't you think?

I'm very happy we didn't pay age.

Everyone should be.

Don't be ridiculous.

You were crying that fans are vilifying jerry for not signing hatcher in your usual "Jerry jones is a great GM" fashion

I am just pointing out that your post is the usual "woe is me , poor Jerry" fluff piece

We could have drafted Mark Ingram

For what Hatcher is getting paid - we have 5 guys manning the D line.
Combined they make it up.
