Anthony Spencer should volunteer to play for free after the Brinks truck load of cash last year didnt give the Cowboys even a dollar's worth of production.

Yeah because all players do that. lol Spencer did not ask to get injured so I don't see where he owes anyone. He took a risk just as well by signing the FA deal when what he wanted was a long term contract that provided some security now he is not going to get a long term deal from anyone

Btw, I think Spencer is the only guy right now that Melton really knows on the team.
Just some trivia.

The thing with Spencer is that we/he would know pretty quickly if the knee was going to hold up or not. It's not a case of the situation lingering. Either the surgery worked or it didn't. If it did you've got a pretty decent player (still). If not... well he gets cut prior to the start of the season.

I think Sturm said the cowboys only have about 1.5 mill left. Thats not going to get it done for Spencer. I personally don't think he is worth that much but Spencer probably doesnt agree with me.

Sturm might be adding in the rookie pool. Which doesn't matter since we get more CSP relief on June 1st from Austin. And we get more than enough to pay for the draft picks from that.

He probably is.

And, when did he become a capologist? He should consult with some of the posters here at the Zone. From what I read in the DMN, Dallas has $5-mil left to spend; offer AS one third of that.

dont agree with this at all

the team wont know enough about spencer's health until the start of TC and maybe even the start of the season and by then the draft will already be over

have to go into the draft not counting on spencer and looking for DE value in any round it is available. there are several options and i would get 2 DEs in the draft to pair up with what we already have

then after the draft we can decide where spencer is healthwise and if he fits with our plan

Did you purposefully avoid the part where I said we should look at him after the draft depending on what happens in the draft?

I agree. Right now there is no hurry on Spencer. Let him continue his rehab work and as camp gets closer if they feel he is ready to go then look to sign him.

I still shudder when I think back to how this team's pass rush struggled for years in the 4-3 after the Super Bowl years with the likes of Shante Carver, Ebenezer Ekuban, and Peppi Zellner.

thanks for that trip down memory lane.

to me it's all about his health. if he is healthy he sure can help the team. if he is not he is not helping any team. a deal with a base and incentives is as safe as you can get. unless he is on the roster opeening day he gets nothing. so there is no risk at all as long as it's a base and incentives

I agree with that.

The Cowboys need to come out of the draft with a DT and a DE... selected earlier than the 5th round.

I don't mind the idea of a similar 'prove it' deal, but any and all similarities end there.

I would not pay much of anything guaranteed as I think there's a good chance that he never comes close to being the player he once was. So, at best, it is a substantially calculated risk paying anything and counting on him in any way.

The downside to me is that they do count on him (again!) and it negatively affects draft strategy and they end up with a hole in that critical area as a result.

Holy moly... You just brought back Peppi Zellner!

Let me get this straight: The guy had a good half a season in 2009 and now you want to bring him back on one leg at 30? Pass.

I would only sign Spencer to a really low risk deal if you're pretty dang sure he'll come back from that knee injury and play effectively. If you have any doubt, at all, then I wouldn't waste any time with it.

There may or may not be something in the offering. I would rather let him walk.
Get what we can this draft and finish it off next year, a good year for DE's I've heard.

If the market turns out to be really cold on Spencer, and he decides to sign a low dollar 1 year prove you're healthy type deal you absolutely bring him back. You still use an early pick on a D lineman and all of a sudden you have a nice starting front 4, with believe it or not respectable depth.

I think there are better options. Give me someone not coming off micro surgery who has played in the 4-3 before. Give me Shaun Phillips on a one year, $1 million contract and I'll take his 10 sacks.
