Cowboys have $23m of dead money this season that, if it was available, would have allowed the Cowboys to keep Ware, Hatcher, and resign Dez sooner.

That dead money hurts and creates an uneven playing fields against the Cowboys.

Even with Romo's age factor, this team's best chance to win is with Romo.

As of now yes. But who knows what happens this year or next year. We may sign or draft a young qb who's solid as well. But as of now, I don't think that guy is on this team yet.

I don't think Bronco's can even afford to give DT big money can they? They have all that money tied into Peyton, Ware, Von Miller, TJ Ward.....they have to resign JT as well. I think it might be best to WAIT in this regard.

They also put a ton of money in Talib. How are they gonna sign a WR who is going to want top 5 money and a TE who is going to want top 5 money.

Shouldn't they be in that salary cap hell that the Cowboys have been in?

Both of these guys are elite, I remember thinking that Denver was out of their mind for taking D. Thomas over Dez in the draft, but Thomas has become a top WR in this league himself. Both are studs and both will and should be paid for it.

Please understand what best chance means. You have to look at probability. Could we get a good qb in the draft, sure, are the chances high? No...

That's an assumption based on your own bias. The reality is people can do both. The reality is that this is just a message board, and many people like to think ahead, not that either aspect has any influence on how the team does. Fail to plan and you plan to fail. So it is understandable to have these discussions now.

If the Cowboys front office is thinking about this stuff now as they should be, they should be putting together a 3-5 year plan for the Cowboys.

I agree, nothing wrong with thinking ahead.

We need to sign Dez asap. He is the top key piece to this offense. Don't let the Murray business fool you. If not for Dez, we would have 8-9 men in the Box regularly, and a ton of run blitz's. Yes we see a few 8 man fronts but not often as some love to believe.

Teams would play 0 coverage, and dare us to pass without Dez.

The Broncos have only $8m of dead money compared to $23m for the Cowboys. That extra $15m is a big difference.

$15m paid for the following:
  • Talib ($7.9m against the 2014 cap)
  • TJ Ward ($3.2m against the 2014 cap)
  • Emmanuel Sanders ($4m against the 2014 cap)
That's $14.1m.

Whenever I hear people here on CZ say dead-money doesn't matter, I shake my head.

I agree, having Dez is key, but even then I'm not sure you can break the bank for him. I'd like to get him at a reasonable rate so that his contract doesn't become a detriment to the rest of the team.

Denver picked up the 5th year option for Von Miller back in May, which will keep him with the Broncos through the 2015 season($9 million salary and cap hit). They will have to re-sign him next year or he will become a free agent at the end of the 2015 season. That is when they will really have to pay him big money.

If we wait, I have a feeling we'll pay for it. It's a shame we won't be able to negotiate until the end of the season. I still believe signing Dez is the key to all of our other free agency moves, especially when it comes to re-signing Murray.

It's good to hear that Denver has tabled talks with both Thomases. That may buy us time. I've been thinking a while that Denver is a year ahead of us in everything. I don't want them setting the bar here.

Didn't Denver just come out and say they would not be talking money with either Thomas until after the season?

I think teams say that just to avoid questions. Team representatives are constantly in contacts with the player's agents (at least for those they want to keep), in hopes of getting a favorable extension done during the season. It's common sense but they say it anyway. I just think they don't want to talk about it, which is understandable.

I think Elway already said the Broncos likely won't be able to afford both WR Thomas and TE Thomas unless TE Thomas takes less than what he can get elsewhere. Wes Welker is also a FA.

I would take Demaryius over Julius easily. Denver will probably franchise Julius since the TE is the cheaper position. I'm guessing Welker is gone after this season.
