They also put a ton of money in Talib. How are they gonna sign a WR who is going to want top 5 money and a TE who is going to want top 5 money.

Shouldn't they be in that salary cap hell that the Cowboys have been in?

I always wonder this. I see how teams spend wildly and to the Cowboys credit we rarely do its just we re-sign our own guys. But I can't see or understand how they can afford so many players at big-money like they do. It might be best to wait and see what they do with Demariyus.

The Broncos have only $8m of dead money compared to $23m for the Cowboys. That extra $15m is a big difference.

$15m paid for the following:
  • Talib ($7.9m against the 2014 cap)
  • TJ Ward ($3.2m against the 2014 cap)
  • Emmanuel Sanders ($4m against the 2014 cap)
That's $14.1m.

Whenever I hear people here on CZ say dead-money doesn't matter, I shake my head.

But that dead money only counts this year, so we are freeing up $23 million next year...............that should be more than enough money to resign Dez, Murray, and Rolando, isn't it?

Am I thinking about this the wrong way, I admit I am not a cap expert but shouldn't that $23 million in dead money all be available next year for us?

Yea i'm sort of the same way. When I hear "Dead Money" I think of a immediate problem but a long term answer. Two years from now won't that be 23 million FREE on our cap?

Denver picked up the 5th year option for Von Miller back in May, which will keep him with the Broncos through the 2015 season($9 million salary and cap hit). They will have to re-sign him next year or he will become a free agent at the end of the 2015 season. That is when they will really have to pay him big money.

Hmmmm......that's the guy they really need to be worried about. I mean lucky for them they have 3 young BEASTS but people are sleeping on the money Von is about to get.

That's what I am thinking, that the dead money only counts this season and maybe some next year if somebody was designated a June 1st cut, but then that's it. All that dead money is now available next year.

Right. That's how my understanding of it was. So I see people freak out about the whole "dead money" as if its going to be there for the next 10 years or so lol. Sure its going to hurt but in reality this teams upgrades should come from the draft anyway. Keep bring young and hungry players here and let the Deadskins fight for free agents.

True, however my point is that dead money THIS year could have made the difference in signing a few extra guys (like Denver) did to help put the club over the top.

You're forgetting that that dead money includes releasing Ware and Hatcher in the first place.

It's not that we couldn't afford these players, and this is a popular misconception. It's that we couldn't mortgage this team's future hoping to get a full return on investment on aging players.

The dead money drops significantly next year to about 8 million, though will probably rise with the release of Carr and Free, that being said if both are June 1st cuts, the dead money will be significantly less for 2015.

I guess that's the lesson here, don't sign aging players to long term contacts (not like fans haven't been saying this for a loooooong time) it WILL bite you in the butt.

I think it's OK to pay older players to 'pay-as-you-go' contracts. The problem is when you sign older players to big deals and constantly restructure their deals and push money into future years. Eventually those bills come due.

It's not that you can't pay any older players, you just can't overpay for them, especially when they begin to decline. You're right it will bite you. They end up taking reps and snaps from younger players, and due to injury or declining skill, they don't produce relative to what you're paying them. It just hurts your team.

Fortunately for us, we only have a few bad contracts left. Carr, Free, and Claiborne. If we can keep this core together for the next 3 years, we should have a lot of success.
