The Dallas Cowboys have a few things they need to work on after last night's game.
Preseason is a great time to work out the kinks in the offense, defense, and special teams. While head coach Jason Garrett certainly understands that, he still wasn't quite pleased with the way his team performed in a few areas. Specifically, tackling and turnovers.
“The stuff we need to work on is obvious,” Garrett said after the 17-7 loss to the Chargers, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “The first unit did a good job on the initial drive on offense. They made a critical fourth down. And the next play we snap the ball though the quarterbacks hand. They take over in the red zone with a chance to go in and score the touchdown. It’s about the ball, the ball, the ball. We didn’t take care of it there. We had another one on a punt return. It was a pretty decent return. the ball comes out at the end of the that. We gave them two opportunities inside the 50-yard line. You can’t make those mistakes in this league.”
To be fair, several starters were missing from Thursday night's game including quarterback Tony Romo. As a result, there was a moment in the first quarter when Brandon Weeden couldn't handle a hard snap right to him which resulted in a drive-killing turnover.

Sounds like typical coach speak after a preseason game.

Lots of ammo for screaming at practice this week.

and rightfully so, for the most part defense was playing grab @@@ and not making basic fundamental tackles. Special teams looked poor. I don't say this as some panic statement, in fact not bother by it at all because it is a chance to give guys a wakeup call. After a couple of weeks in training camp feeling good here is some reality and things we need to work on.

The coaches probably appreciate this more than most people know.

I have no doubt about it. You learn more from mistakes than you do from success. I would think Rod will have guys hitting the tackling drills hard this week.

Parcels used to subtly "throw" a pre-season game just so he could use it as a teaching point.

That is what happens under the new CBA. They play 2 hand touch all OTAs and TC so tackling sucks. SD did not tackle well either.
