He, Slater, signed his contract extension in 2014...newer years normally mean more money per player.

Slaters numbers on Defense the last three years...

31 tackles
3 assisted tackles
0 Sacks
0 passes defended
0 INTs

Heath's numbers on Defense the last few years

83 tackles
19 assists
0 sacks
3 Forced Fumbles
1 Fumble Recovery
3 INTs

A few dollars more in a few years later of signing a contract....not that much, but easy to act like it is.

Slater is a WR

You don't draft or extend ST guys.

He is a year to year type.

He was the biggest playmaker in our secondary last year. If the Jones plan on purging the defense they need someone cheap that can make an interception.

All joking aside. He makes double minimum wage and he got a signing bonus. He works hard and keeps his mouth shut. He's a good team guy and stays out of trouble. The contract in minimal on the salary cap now and for the future. As much as I want to find a problem with this, I can't.

Slater is a WR

They had him playing on defense in the stats.

If you look up his offensive stats...it is even worse lol

His career stats at WR (from 2011)

7 targets, 1 rec 46 yards.

That's it

He is mostly a returner and it looks like he has defensive stats according tot he patriots site numbers.

No one wanted him at 1.6m......no reason to pay him more than that for more years......makes 0 sense...

they could have offered 1m and he would have jumped at it......just business..they play hardball with Murray, Hardy, McClain but give up easy for Beasley, Heath, Hanna.......good to be RKGs

Good ole' Bill. Kind of like the WR they had from Marshall (Troy ??), he played some CB for them.

Exactly, were other teams beating down his door for his services? Probably not, but it's a fair contract. He's 24, so there is a chance that, you know, he could actually improve.ha

LOL

You must be kidding.

If you are, good one.

If not, it's not even worth trying to explain how dumb of a post that is.

It's funny watching people really contort themselves to fault this deal. This kid has improved into a decent backup safety, had 2 INT's and a forced fumble last year, and will fill a necessary role on special teams for the next few years.

Guys are like "give him a contract where he sleeps on the floor at Valley Ranch and gets all the free Jerryword™ nachos he wants, he'll jump at that!"

What do you mean no one wanted him for 1.6m?

That's what we guaranteed him with the low tender we slapped him with.

You literally don't even know the fundamentals about which you're enraged.

Slater's niche is special teams, as is Heath's right? I don't think this deal was about Heath's defense - hence him only playing when there's an injury or when Wilcox goes full ******.

Yes we are more strict when it comes to long term deals with high guarantees especially when it comes to the case of two players with special circumstances. Silly to compare Bease, Heath and Hanna to those guys considering how tiny their contracts are. At best, those 3 players are role players and are paid as such...you're comparing them to 3 starters that are more valuable players. I am not quite sure what point you're making...

As far as the contract? Seems like we pretty much guaranteed him his salary this year, and tacked on a few extra years but far from roster security past this season. This is a non story and this thread shouldn't be longer than 3 pages but I have a feeling it will.
