He, Slater, signed his contract extension in 2014...newer years normally mean more money per player.

Slaters numbers on Defense the last three years...

31 tackles
3 assisted tackles
0 Sacks
0 passes defended
0 INTs

Heath's numbers on Defense the last few years

83 tackles
19 assists
0 sacks
3 Forced Fumbles
1 Fumble Recovery
3 INTs

A few dollars more in a few years later of signing a contract....not that much, but easy to act like it is.

looking at this, I would say heath is better than the NE guy who makes the same $.
I like heath, and he might keep getting better.

If Dallas didn't sign Heath, he would have been out of a job for 10 minutes.

C'mon, people.

Hell Sorry Arse Danny McCray had someone sign him away from us so, good STers and adequate injury subs on defense area premium. Hell look all the safeties Baltimore lost that weren't Ed Reed 5-6 years ago. Nakamura, Leonhard, etc

Solid contract, I really don't get why some people are pissed.

If you want to be pissed about something, be pissed that Kellen Moore is currently #2 on the depth chart behind Romo, not at Heath's contract.

So he's making money on par w/ 5X Special Teams Pro Bowler - Matthew Slater, NE Patriots.

His contract is less per year than what Slater got 16 months ago, and it extends three years farther into the future (Slater isn't even signed past this season). Heath's average share of the cap is much less than Slater's, and Heath actually can play somewhere besides special teams.

Better yet- be pissed that half of our instant gratification fan base is convinced they are talking the Joneses into reaching for a QB that won't see the field, like wasting #34.

The contract is basically 4 years of the low tender with a signing bonus added to it. Hardly worth getting upset over. It's a little more than I would have liked, I figured the SB was going to be around 1m on a 4 year deal. Thought salaries would be in the 1-1.5m range. As a core ST guy and a pretty good one at that, and an improving safety, it's not a bad deal.

But besides, that, it's on par. That's his point I think.

Just kidding. I don't know what his point was actually.

Considering he probably plays most snaps overall, it's a good value. Unlike Wilcox, he has improved every year and he is young and one of the better athlete on the team.

For a good ST guy and a capable backup safety, I don't see why anyone should be upset concerning this contract.

A little more than you'd like, but it's easy to think of it as a convenience fee. Just because you can replace these guys every year doesn't mean you should. It takes up scouts' time looking for replacements in FA and the draft, and it takes up the front office's time negotiating new deals.

There's a reason Parcells always brought in his guys. They're good in the locker room and show younger players the right way to go about things. Plus, it theoretically lights a fire under Wilcox because now he's the only young safety who didn't get an extension in a contract year.

He hits like a truck, just needs a little better feel for the game. Where did he visit this Spring? Never heard if there was any interest anywhere else? Hopefully somebody was interested hence the signing bonus.

If they cut him after this season whats the damage?

The report indicated no guaranteed money beyond the $1.8M signing bonus in Jeff Heath's new contract.

A lot of times with these new contracts, the first year base salary will be immediately guaranteed upon signing with the second year becoming guaranteed at an early point the following off-season.

If the signing bonus is all that's guaranteed, Heath would represent $1.35M in potential dead money if 2017 were he to be released.

That's $0.571K less than his 2017 cap hit of $1.921M, but the team would add a new salary with the player replacing Heath.

That money could go against the cap all at once or be spread over two seasons ($0.450K in '17, $0.900K in '18) if Heath were released during training camp or upon final cuts.

Heath is a core special teams player and good at his job, but he's a long way from being a great special teams player and I've seen no indication he was challenging for serious playing time as a safety to date.

If he does, great.

I'll be hoping we can find someone better.
