I get the impression Spencer is phoning it in. Like that incident on Hard knocks, and is disruptive behavior off the field. I may be reading too much into it though.

na you could be right. I think it was definetly part of the reason they were drafted.

i think it was more to prepare for loss of losing carpenter with jason williams
the other linebackers for backups to replace greg ellis

along the way, maybe push spencer, but more for departure of greg ellis

remember what jerry said, the players that are due a big contract coming up, like this is gregs last year, next year they wont have to sign him to huge money and contend with his complacency,

I'm all for it, whatever the primary reason. Bring in young pass rushers every draft then, keep that competitive edge.

Ellis needs to go, hopefully for a pick, time to cut ties, perhaps just before the preseason to accurately gauge what we have in the young guns. And Spencer definitely needs a kick in the pants. Here's hoping these high motor high character guys motivate him to bigger and better things.

I love that if Spencer just mails it in and thinks he will start because he's been there for 3 years and was a first round pick, then he will be sorely mistaken and get his butt kicked by B-Will and Butler.

As well as to make up for the loss of Burnett.

the guy is likely on notice, the reality is you would have to call him a bust at this point, hopefully he'll step it up. The bar incident I'm sure did not help even though charges were dropped.

Drafting Micheal Johnson out of GT would've had spencer making his full time residence at valley ranch the rest of the offseason. I agree with the premise of the thread. Spencer was a 1st round pick we traded up to get and he's yet to pay dividends.

Is the real reason we drafted those DE/OLB's is to motivate Anthony Spencer? Discuss...
No. The real reason is to enhance the defense, in particular pass defense applying more pressure on the quarterback, with an emphasis on substituting situational pass rushers. If a by-product of that strategy is having Anthony Spencer take it up a notch, so be it.

They were drafted because we needed depth. If one of them can start, so much the better. But they were drafted for depth, Special Teams, and character.

Lets see Ware is unhappy that a deal hasn't been made yet. They draft 2 DE's during the draft....they could be preparing for life with out ware.

I think Spencer's play on the field has been good. He was yanked his rookie year for Ellis, and he was playing good. Ellis went on to have a good year.

Last year, he got hurt after an excellent training camp. In my opinion, you don't have DE/OLB (after a knee scope) playing special teams. He hurt the hamstring after coming off the knee scope. Does DeMarcus Ware cover kicks?

If everyone wants to see what Spencer really has (being a full time player), get rid of Greg Ellis and find out.

A little competition never hurt anyone, and if that is the result of the added depth, fine.

I'm just saying stranger things have happened. I wouldn't rule that out they can use it as leverage in contract negotiations also.

Use low round picks as leverage against an all pro who got 20 sacks last season?

Brilliant!

What is wrong with you guys? Has everyone totally forgotten that Wade for a good portion of the second half of the year was raving about how unblockable Spencer was and that they had to find more ways to get him on the field? Or have you all forgotten that hes already told Spencer and the media that Spencer will be starting this year over Ellis!

Spencer is fine and is going to make alot of you beg him or his forgiveness! He is exactly what we need opposite Ware the way Phillips was for Merriman untill the roids ruined Merriman!
