Normally I always agree with what you say and always enjoy reading your posts. On this I don't agree sorry. Lb depth was the backbone to the defense. Most of the forum talk all the junk about Carter and go back and see how many games he sealed the deal on. I agree he was lazy at times but someone, anyone tell me, who is going to replace him. That's another hole to fill. We need de, lb'er or two, need a cb. All that cannot be filled via the draft. Well it can but they won't be doing much first year. Durant I'm ok with losing, he wasn't a starter. Carter was. We all are die hard, crazy as Hell, love our dallas cowboys. If we wasn't we wouldn't stay on this forum for hours at a time acting like the owner of the team. But we have to have a de. Now we have to get lb help, when we have other positions to be addressing

Thanks man... always nice to hear that someone likes some of the things I write on here.

Good post too. You should post more often.

As far as Carter goes, I understand the angst. I do. But there are a few things that mitigates any unease that I feel about him:

First, remember this year he wasn't even starting part of the time. Marinelli preferred Wilber and Hitchens over Carter at SLB. When players started dropping like flies at that spot, Carter had to play and he did better than he had been, but still made mistakes. Marinelli hates mistakes. They drive him crazy and it comes as no shock that Carter was never a Marinelli favorite. Throw in that Carter was never crazy about contact and it is no wonder that Rod didn't mind seeing him leave. Marinelli is a great D coordinator though and he eventually found a few things that Carter did pretty well, but he limited what Rod wanted to do IMO.

Secondly, the Sam OLB in Marinelli's 43 scheme isn't a difficult position to fill. It just isn't. A middling free agent pickup like Durant would more than capably fill in at SLB for Carter. Jimmy Johnson knew those guys were a dime-a-dozen and Marinelli knows they are too. Hitchens came in and played very well for a 4th round pick, but a big part of that is that OLB in the Dallas defense isn't a difficult position to play. It is in large part instinctual (something Carter lacked big-time) and as long as you have a pretty good athlete who is a natural LB, you will get more than adequate play there.

So, I don't consider Carter (or Durant for that matter) to be much of a loss at all, and if you pay attention to how the Cowboys reacted to their free agency status, I don't think the team thinks so either. They likely value Hitchen's more highly than either Carter or Durant, and they'll likely draft a guy who can come in and contribute like Hitchens did last year.

On top of that, I think they'll find a free agent (besides Rivers) that can come in and compete at the position as well... and do so at a more than reasonable price (43 OLB's just aren't very expensive).

Rolando McClain is a bit of a different animal than either Durant or Carter IMO. I think the team would like to keep him but with some questions off the field, they don't want to go very high. Ro brings an attitude that is good for the D and is very, very physical. I know it is early but I think the team would like to bring back McClain for MLB and move Lee outside with Hitchens opposite him as the 3 starters. Then, they can maybe sign another low priced OLB candidate and draft another Hitchens type in the draft.

I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong... it could be the complete opposite of that... but I think they have a plan in place for LB and I think part of that plan was to let Carter go, offer Durant a low contract and let him go if he wants more and then get some other guys to play in their spots because the team didn't think they did anything that was anywhere close to irreplaceable. I think they'll have a few candidates for those spots and then they'll let them fight it out in camp and see how it shakes out. At MLB, if McClain is reasonable with his demands they'll bring him back. If not, they'll play Lee there, let Hitchens move there if Lee gets hurt and have an OLB to replace Hitch if Lee does get hurt.

Just my two cents.

Make us better?

1) don't get caught up in this ridiculous spending spree on day 1 or 2 [check]
2) bide your time with your own players...this is working so far IMO...if Murray continues to NOT get signed, his asking price will start to drop...I would really like to see him back - keep the gang together...then, work on a long-term deal with Dex....the rest of your own? pfffft...we haven't lost much yet, certainly not a legit starter (Carter wasn't starting the last quarter of the year, although he was playing well)
3) focus on ONE thing, Hardy...if they do something like that and let him know they want him, then the off -season is a success whether they get him tomorrow, Friday, or late next week - stay the course

Here's what Gosselin says about free agency...

"If I owned an NFL team, I would put the building on lockdown the opening week of free agency. Nobody in, nobody out. This is when all the crazy money — correct that, all the stupid money — is spent. And no one has spent crazy money over the years like the Jones family."

But in the same article he did say--

..."Unless I’m buying a quarterback or pass rusher, I’m not spending that kind of money in March."

And exactly the type of two cents I wanted to hear when I posted the thread. Even if I disagree with parts, it's a lot of good stuff, and good conversation.

don't lose any more linebackers!

then add Hardy, Forsett. Perish Cox. Lean heavy on defense in draft.

You lose Murray and now you have to replace him in the draft.

You lost both Durant and Carter, and possibly McClain... now linebacker is a priority...

Oops, the defensive line is still an abject failure.... weren't we supposed to focus on the trenches?

What? A couple of our draft picks didn't pan out at all?

Now we're an even worse offense and defense than we were last year?

That is the route we're currently on.

I could have seen replacing Murray in the draft, as long as we invested on the defensive side of the ball.

Not restructuring Romo and not signing Dez long term? You might as well trade them.

Please send an e-mail to Jerry Jones and tell him we went 12-4 last season. Stripping the team down and not getting replacements/upgrades does not equate to another 12-4 season.

I sure hope last season's success did not make him overconfident and complacent.

What did the Cowboys do last season at this time?

whatever they did....it was not enough....because I do not recall us being in the Super Bowl....I don't recall us being in the NFC title game. For those who missed the memo...the objective is to make it to the Super Bowl! We are not the Cincy Bengals. This did not become the most valued franchise in NFL history gloating over making the playoffs!
