Walker a winner in mixed martial arts debut

By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

SUNRISE, Fla. – Herschel Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, won his professional mixed martial arts debut on Saturday at the tender age of 47, but he proved one thing: He’s a better football player than a fighter.

The one-time Dallas Cowboys star stopped a totally ineffective Greg Nagy at 2:17 of the third round on Saturday at the BankAtlantic Center on a Showtime-televised Strikeforce card.

Walker took Nagy down in each of the three rounds and tried to punish Nagy on the ground. He landed a few punches and seemed as if he were going to go for a submission at several points, but he was unable to do anything dramatic.

Walker, who has long been a martial artist, was pleased with the win and thanked Nagy for the opportunity.

“It’s kind of tough to fight an old man,” Walker said.

Nagy had no offense and spent most of the fight on his back, trying to fend off Walker, who trained at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., under the guidance of the renowned Javier Mendez.

Walker’s endurance was sensational, but he looked stiff in his standup game and didn’t have a good concept of what he was doing on the ground. According to CompuStrike, Walker landed 77 of 106 strikes overall, an amazing 73 percent. He connected on 69 of 91 on the ground. Nagy landed just seven punches.

“This was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Walker said.

Robbie Lawler scored one of the best knockouts in a long time after taking a beating from Melvin Manhoef for most of their fight. Manhoef was stalking Lawler, raking him with punches and hard kicks and seemed on the verge of an impressive victory.

Lawler checked a kick and as Manhoef rushed to him, Lawler ripped a straight right that landed on the temple. Manhoef went down quickly. Lawler landed a quick punch on the ground before he was pulled off and the bout was stopped at 3:33 of the first.

“This guy is a killer and he was coming after me,” Lawler said. “I knew I was going to catch him and I just didn’t want to get overextended.”

Bobby Lashley, who still is a professional wrestler, improved to 5-0 as a mixed martial artist by dominating late replacement Wes Sims. Lashley quickly took Sims down and pummeled him on the ground, forcing referee Troy Waugh to stop it at 2:06 of the first.

Sims, a former cast member of “The Ultimate Fighter,” admitted he hadn’t trained for the fight as Strikeforce struggled to find an opponent for Lashley. Sims was paunchy around the middle, while Lashley had a bodybuilder’s rugged physique.

It was no contest, as Sims accomplished nothing other than picking up a paycheck.

So when is his next fight?

He says at the post interview that he will let his fight team decide if he should fight again.

No doubt the guy still does 1000 pushups and sit-ups a day, but I heard that he wants to fight the best in the sport and pointed out Fedor Emelianko....Fedor would finish him too quickly.

Good job Herschel!

Thanks for that, DC...

Kind of irritating that the announcers were acting like Herschel was some joe coming off his couch at age 47 to try this. I hate to say it again -- wait, no I don't -- but Herschel is one of the bigger bad ***** of all time. The man would've set every record in the book if he'd stayed all four years at Georgia, he ran for the most yards of any pro RB ever (USFL, but still), and he's just a freak of nature. And unlike a lot of athletes, he's never taken steroids or other drugs or done anything unhealthy to his body.

So it's not a shock to me, anyway, that he could beat some MMA JAG even if it was his first fight.

You know what Herschel did that I probably respected more than anything?

Coming back to Dallas in '96 and '97 and returning kicks, along with an odd screen pass here and there.

How many guys of his stature have done that at the end of their careers? And the guy still had some serious speed even at that point. Almost 29 yards a kick return in '96 at 34 years old.

Herschel was my sports hero growing up and I give him huge props for stepping into the MMA ring, I mean he is 47 and that takes some balls.

But seriously, this sport is full of beasts with speed and power that is just scary. Being a big fan of MMA and having been following it for 10+ years, I don't see Herschel being much competition against most of the legit fighters. He looked slow and robotic and would get knocked out very quickly by most contenders.

Again, credit to Herschel but I'm not getting too excited about him taking this sport by storm.

He is too stiff and robotic.
That is the same set of issues that prevented him from being one of the top RBs in NFL history.

That is wrong. Stiff and robotic guys don't lead their team in receptions(then a Cowboys record) in their first year in the league. Sure he was not as fluid as many other backs, but the guy could get it done in the NFL. It is not his fault that the teams he played on other than the Cowboys refused to feed him the rock. Landry got the ball to him as much as possible and it worked. And that was with Steve Peuller at QB. He was one of the top RBs in the NFL during his first 3 seasons in Dallas. The situation changed for him when he went to the Vikes and later the Giants and Eagles. Those teams did not know how or refused to use him as a feature back. That is bad coaching.

He'd get beat quickly by any contender. But ANYBODY would in their first fight. Fact is, there were a lot of issues, he was very stiff, but for his first fight, he did a hell of a job and he's a phenomenal athlete. Hell, the guy he was fighting has some potential as flexible as he is.
