SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Herschel Walker will make his mixed martial arts debut next month.

Walker starred for the Cowboys, among other teams, in the NFL after winning the Heisman at the University of Georgia.

The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner will face an opponent to be announced as part of a fight card at the Florida Panthers' arena on Jan. 30.

Walker recently entered a 12-week training camp in San Jose, Calif., after signing a multi-fight contract with promoter Strikeforce.
The former NFL running back holds a fifth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

I would never underestimate Walker. He is one of, if not, my favorite athlete of all time. Never lifted weights. Over 1,000 push-ups and sit-ups a day for most of his life.

You're probably right, but I don't know...he never loved the game of football. He's said that all the game was to him was a job and he did it because he was good at it.

This...

I hope he doesn't hurt himself out there. Infomercials are easier.

Hershel is such an athlete, and still in phenomenal shape. Watched Randy Coutoure lately? He's also 46, and I actually think Hershel is in better shape, but doesn't have Randy's experience regardless of his Tae Kwon Do.

Good luck Hershel.

I wish him luck and hope he doesn't get hurt. He was one of my favorites also and I always marveled at his fitness routine.

46 isn't what it used to be.

That's what I was thinking too.

As I'm sitting here procrastinating getting the last of the wood split and into the shed because my back aches.

Tae Kwon Do is not the best training for MMA. Jujitsu, wrestling, & kickboxing/muay thai seem to be the more typical backgrounds that MMA guys come from. Tae Kwon Do is too formalized to be easily adapted to MMA.

That's just my opinion of course.

That said, Herschel will probably do pretty well for his age but I wouldn't expect too much.

I am familiar with most of the guys and Herschel will get his arse stomped when he meets anyone decent. Heck, I could probably whip him. :) I am 6'4", 265 and 6% body fat!

Didn't he come out and say that he is/was schitzoid or some other mental ailment? How did he get medical clearance if true?

I don't think he's a guy that just needs the money....remember, this is a guy who got involved in ballet to help his footwork.

Tae Kwon Do usually doesn't work in MMA, because it focuses on flashy kicks that leave you vulnerable to counters and takedowns. I took Tae Kwon Do as a kid (maybe I didn't go to a good place, but the guy was a 4th degree blackbelt), then I spent some time doing kickboxing and MMA and the standup is completely different.

Kickboxing and MMA is about fighting, while Tae Kwon Do is almost like you're doing a dance or doing an art form.

That's not to say Herschel won't be successful, because athleticism is a huge advantage. Plus he's a sixth degree blackbelt, so it's not like he knows nothing. It may come down to his ground skills though.

I think it was multiple personality disorder but I could be wrong. And so could I.

I think Lyoto Machida would respectfully disagree...

Machida does Karate. Real Karate, not the watered-down version they have in the U.S.
