Anyone else seeing some similarities in how this team is put together and the 91 Cowboys?

QB...check

Running game...check

OL becoming a strength...check

Explosive receivers...check

A young and fast defense with something to prove...check

If we get that wave on the DL working I can easily see 11-5 and a couple of playoff games.

I agree on your points (seriously) other than the defense is not just young but lacking in talent and the HC is WAY inferior

Let's see how it plays out

I say no but I compare this team to the 1996 Denver Broncos team without the defense. Think about that.

I actually do see history repeating itself.

But the Cowboy Era I see repeating itself is the Post-Jimmy Era (around 1999-2002)

Jerry Jones firmly in place as team’s principal decision maker. Check.

Aging quarterback past his prime whose retirement led to parade of projects. Check

Unproven head coach. Check.

Previous bad drafts resulting in a paper thin roster. Check.

Carousel on the coaching staff (e.g., Jack Reilly was brought in as OC in 2000, but took the fall for lack of offensive production and was dismissed after only 2 seasons and replaced by former failed head coach Bruce Coslet)

Individual players who still made watching the Cowboys an enjoyable experience (e.g., Darren Woodson, Flozell Adams). Check.

I'm afraid I really don't and here's why: The drafting from 1990 through the next following years were significantly bolstered by the trade of Hershel Walker (this trade included 8 draft picks and 5 players) allowing the Cowboys to pick several times in the 1st round and relatively high, because the first few years (1990 and 1991) teamed with Landry's disasterous 1989 season had the team at the bottom of the league meaning the Cowboys without the Vikings picks were already drafting pretty high. The Vikings who gave up all their picks to get Walker were also at the bottom of the league and therefore were also picking high.

Here's the breakdown:

The Cowboys received

  • DE Alex Stewart
  • Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1990 (21) (traded this pick along with pick (81) for pick (17) from Pittsburgh to draft Emmitt Smith)
  • Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (12) (Alvin Harper)
  • Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (38) (Dixon Edwards)
  • Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (37) (Darren Woodson)
  • Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (71) (traded to New England, who drafted Kevin Turner)
The Vikings received

  • Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1990 (54) (Mike Jones)
  • San Diego's 5th round pick - 1990 (116) (Reggie Thornton)
  • Dallas's 10th round pick - 1990 (249) (Pat Newman)
  • Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1991 (68) (Jake Reed)

These Cowboys have a handfull of mid-round picks as a result of mediocrity. The only similiarity in the Cowboys now and then is what they want to do on both sides of the ball. The question is can they be as successful despite the lack of top tier talent to do it?

Other than the fact that we are missing a Hall of Fame QB, the NFL leader in rushing, multiple pro bowlers on both sides of the ball, and one of the greatest coaching staffs ever assembled, I would say we are pretty far from being anywhere close to that team.

Not to mention, back then Jerry Jones was only pretending to make major decisions. Now he is making major decisions.

Oh, and that defense.

Even with a healthy Lee the defense was a at least one offseason away from collecting enough talent in order to have a shot at being a top-10 defense... And that was before the Lee injury.

At this point I see the Dallas Cowboys as being maybe a lighter-weight version of the New Orleans/Green Bay's of the world where the offense is going to have to carry the defense.

Some really need to read better.

One, I said the 1991 team...you know the WC team that beat the Bears and lost to the Lions and not the 92 team that won the Super Bowl.

Two, I said similarities on how it was put together not that the talent levels were the same. Although I do think that the 2014 offense has the potential to be much more explosive than the 1991 team was.

Another thing the teams have in common are special teams.

In 1991 we also got a new offensive coordinator, Norv Turner...Who help turn the offense around.

Love the OP's optimism, although it seems somewhat wildly extreme. This team has far too many players depending upon complete recovery from their many serious injuries to assume their health will be complete enough for an 11-5 season ending record to be forthcoming. Also, the number of youngsters that are seriously unproven leaves ample room to question whether they might be capable of offering a difference-making performance in 2014. This team's success, at least to that extent, would be dependent entirely too much upon good fortune smiling upon it more drematically than ever before. It's not impossible but highly doubtful.
