You make a very good point x.

What the current team needs is that "stepping-stone" season like that did going from 7-9 to 11-5 and then winning the whole shebang.

This team has been 8-8 for... a while now... LOL!

It needs to break through and give fans a couple wins more before there is a solid base of optimism.

I don't think a stepping stone season is a precursor of things to come in this era of football. We are now playing in an era of teams going from 11-5 to 5-11 and back to 11-5 in the subsequent seasons. Hell 8-8 is practically a dynasty in this age of a new 6 playoff teams per year, especially considering all of the backbreaking injuries we had to endure.

The OL should be one of the best in the NFL. Linehan seems to get results. Romo is an elite QB. The WR corps is better. The TEs should be. I like our RBs esp behind this line. What's not to like? Doesn't guarantee results though.

I have more doubts, which is no surprise. I don't think Martin is going to have a big impact on the line. It is a new position that he hasn't played before and he is a rookie. Another concern with Martin is that he is not a "power" olineman and he depends more on technique. Power OL usually have more success as rookies than the OL that depends on technique. I think it will take a season or two for Martin to adjust to the position and the physical strength it takes to play OG well at the pro level. Romo may have lost something with the surgery. How much and can he overcome it are questions that only time will answer. I don't see any improvement with the WRs. Austin is gone and I don't see any rookie WR that compares to him when he was healthy. I am glad he is gone though.bas for the RBs, I don't see any upgrades at this point. There is Murray and his production when he is healthy, but I hope they can upgrade the backup position with a new player because there is not much there IMO. I don't see a big jump in the talent level and I am not sure about the new OC.

if i post negatively, but can back it up and the team backs up what i say, is that negative and just reality? If the defense is bad, the defense is bad, we are adults we dont need to fight over sugar coating it. the team is bad. lets just start there, is it a Jags team bad, no, is it a fair roster with a bad coach, possibly. is it injury bitten, sure, but at the end of the season, its a bad defense.

I never mentioned you being negative in this thread at least. If you look at all my posts here you'll see I have no real idea where this team will end up. So I'm not conceding this team will be bad. In fact I think the offense has a chance of being historically good. It's the D I have no idea about.

I dindt take it that you were saying it to me personally, but i am saying that if i say it and can back it up, than its real, optimism and pessimism need not be labeled.

I see it a little bit. What may be missing is that great DL although I'm not disparaging this latest version. I think they will be an asset esp if Spencer contributes. I think we're a player or two away on D.

I'm thinking the O will average 30+ppg and the D around 20. That should make some waves if the turnover diff is a + one.

I think th defense is a year are two away. Offense i can see 30 ppg but 20 on defense I'll just have to see.
One way or the other a damn interesting season is approaching and wind begin to howl.

If Jimmy was HC I may share some of the OP's optimism. Sadly we are still stuck with Red who history shows will cost us at least a couple of games again this year with piss poor clock management.

So Red is permanently bad and can't grow as a coach?

I don't even think it's as good as the 1990 7-9 team. That team was clearly on the upswing.

Not that the team is is complete but if you can't evaluate the talent acquired by this team please give up that dream of becoming an NFL scout.

I remember it well. I won $25 bucks off of a 49ers fan when that team made the playoffs. I don't see near the potential and excitement surrounding this team. Some of that has to do with Romo and Witten approaching the end of their careers. The core group of good defensive players are gone as well. By the time the defense is fixed, the team will be looking for a QB. In the past, Jerry has struggled in that area. The timing stinks for all areas of this team to come together at the same time.

sorry you struggle with such a blind spot jnday other wise your a fine poster

The salary cap and free agency era has changed things for the NFL. You are absolutely right about how teams can go from basement to playoffs in a year, and then back to the basement (Skins).

I guess anything is possible but after 3 1/2 years as a HC and a lifetime around football, he is still making stupid game / clock decisions that any Pop Warner coach would know better that cost the team at least 2 games a season. So far he he has not grown at all in that aspect. Who knows, maybe Jerry will include "Game Clock Management for Dummies" in his training literature this year?

Anyone else seeing some similarities in how this team is put together and the 91 Cowboys?

QB...check

Running game...check

OL becoming a strength...check

Explosive receivers...check

A young and fast defense with something to prove...check

If we get that wave on the DL working I can easily see 11-5 and a couple of playoff games.

I see a lot of positives and the negitives but this team has to learn how to win, how to close games out and how not to beat themselfs. One of the main things I credit Jimmy with it forming a strong willed team who seldom beat themselfs. I think those teams of the 90's thrived on pressure this team has yet to handle it.

Jimmy won at OSU ... Jimmy won national titles at Miami. The ginger has gone 8-8 for 3 seasons.
