No, you can't pop a receiver square in the back and knock him down when the QB is still in the pocket and the ball has not been thrown yet. That hit was a picture perfect example of illegal contact.

It should have been a penalty.

ARTICLE 2. ILLEGAL CONTACT WITHIN FIVE YARDS. Within the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender may not make original contact in the back of a receiver, nor may he maintain contact after the receiver has moved beyond a point that is even with the defender.
Maybe Baldinger's comments about hurting Zeke did rub off on that game winning drive.

I hadn't even considered that. Now I'm mad. I hope somebody with the Cowboys sends a tape of that to the NFL front office and demands a fine on that defender.
Yes that was an illegal hit and in my mind I'm like where's the flag no defender cannot hit an WR running a route before the ball leaves the QB's hand and it was flag happy Jerome Boger's crew who was seeing every other infraction like that bogus holding call on Yosimite that wiped out a huge 63 yd Elliott run but yet Elliott gets hit in the back in the midst of the play and every ref was blind all of the sudden I'm happy they beat the Beagles.

Good to know, thanks for the clarification!

How is it illegal?

Pretty simple. The NFL rule book says it's illegal. That's how it's illegal.
That was a legitimate question. I wasn't being rude to @Irvin88_4life, I was legitimately asking to be directed to the rule that prohibits it, because I wasn't aware it was illegal contact (and even admitted as much).

That's going to get called every time. I know watching that live, I knew the flag was coming.

Yep. Had him across the numbers holding his shoulder and the play when right past him which in a ref's mind potentially impacts the play. We aren't talking about a WR on the other side of the field, 50-yards from the play.

Wow, I just watched the video. I never noticed it live or on all of the other replays. That was terrible.

This game has bad refs all over it. There were bad calls on both sides. That long run by Zeke should have not been called at all. This entire team of refs should have been fired after this game.

Did you guys see what happened to Zeke on the final play of the game? He's out to the left, clearly as a receiver, and #53 from Philly comes over and nails him right in the back sending Zeke face first into the turf just past the line of scrimmage. Is that a legal play? It can't be right? But it was literally right in front of one of the refs and he did nothing, so maybe I'm missing something. It looked dirty to me. Thoughts?

Link, video of final play (Somebody smarter than me feel free to embed video)

If that wasn't unnecessary roughness, I don't know what is -- a pass wasn't even coming his way when Zeke got hit. The ref must have left his thinking cap at home. Seems like Philly gets away with more than their share of that crap -- maybe it's 'cause they do it so often. Anyhow, that was a pretty inconsistent crew to begin with.

That's a flag happy crew for sure. Seemed fairly even though, and any disparity in penalties called was mostly because our guys were playing an idiotic game through the first 3 quarters.

That's one of the reasons I'm honestly shocked that philly fans (well shocked is the wrong word since I find most of them to be idiots) could honestly believe they "gave us the game".

We dominated them offensively (by numbers) and continually extended their stalled drives, gifting them first downs and short fields.

They got their ***** kicked

6:12 - Dak did not leave the pocket, he was still within the pocket and if anything, he stepped up at a chance to scramble, but he was still within the pocket when the shove happened.

thanks for the youtube version !
It was a cheap shot and maybe against the rules, not sure, but a cheap shot at least.
not good for player safety.

Elliot needs to watch out next time they play these guys, and some payback on 53 ?? would be good.
