I'm sure some of our history buffs here can help with this question;

Has an NFL team with a QB that they consider franchise quality, and a contract that reflects that, ever drafted a QB in the top 5 of the draft? Top 10? Top 15?

NOT the end of round 1 or early round 2...but very early round 1.

Honest question here, and not trying to make a case one way or the other.
I'm actually in the camp that if Jones ,Clay, Garrett et al love a player that much and think they should go for it, then I'm on board.

Most teams that are drafting top 5 don't have a vet QB who is at the top of his game like we do.

The Colts when Manning missed the entire season is the closest thing I can think of and they cashed in on their opportunity.

Now we may have the chance to cash in on the QB of our choosing if Kaepernick goes to Cleveland but im sure we'll take the Defensive End that doesnt provide much outcome towards winning and losing.

I don't believe it's ever happened, at least in the last few decades.

Closest examples would be Rodgers in the 20s when GB had Favre........... and then Luck being picked right after Manning was cut.

I think you're right.

In other words, no very close examples.
As you know
Taking Luck after Manning was cut was a no-brainer. I mean, if we cut Romo, then of course we would grab a QB if we liked the player...they may even reach somewhat. But they aren't cutting him.
And Rodgers in the late 20s is not the same either. In fact TWO mid 20s 1st rounders don't even add up to one top 5 pick trade value wise. So the risk/reward/cost etc was not remotely the same.

Having said that, my stance really is neutral here. The arguments are strong either way.

Most teams that have a proven franchise QB don't pick in the top 5 or so very often. There is also age of the QB you have to factor in. How often has a team with a franchise QB who has had back surgery and a major injury the next year and in the age range of romo ever picked in the top 5. My guess is not very many at all

Manning was only cut because the Colts were assured of getting Luck. If they were drafting 4th like us and Luck fell to them, they would have drafted him even if Manning was still on the roster.

Most franchise QBs are not one hit away from retirement like Romo is. When Peyton became fragile, Indy drafted a QB. It paid off for them. We need to do the same.
