I really like this player. He's quick to go for the INT, has great instincts, and when he gets the ball he's quick to make plays and bring it to the house for 6. He plays really, really, quickly. No hesitation. He has the natural talent to be an Ed Reed ball hawk type player... Looks like a steal in the 2nd.

Nose for the ball and seems to have good range. If he's there in the second, Cowboys should definitely go after this kid.

Of course he looks good in highlights but in game film he gives up alot of plays trying for the int. Also takes bad angles to get to the runner. Play reminds me of rahim moore. 2nd might be to soon just depends on BPA. I would think 3rd

noway. He'll drop after the combine. He looked bad this yr. USC exposed him early and it went downhill from there.

I thought I read somewhere that scouts said it looked like he was playing not to get hurt this year.

He was, he played with a sport hernia for the whole season. I really like the way this kid plays. He fits what the Cowboys need which is a rangy, sure tackling, ballhawk, that plays like his hair is on fire.

The way I see is if the guy is capable of being an instant starter, I'd draft him in the 2nd if that is where he is slotted.

I would definitely classify Derron Smith as a day one starter. I also believe he is one of the better players in this draft in terms of football instincts. You can't teach instincts, and they are what separates a great player from a good one. I also never see him give up on a play, he's got a crazy high motor. Though, he did play through a hernia last season, which did slow him down. However, it is certainly not a permanent injury, and I look at it as nothing more than something that is permitting us to steal him a round or two after he could've gone. He is a late 1st/early 2nd prospect if not for the sports hernia last year.

Derron makes a ton of great plays that are clearly due to nothing more than great awareness, he had 4-5 picks during his college career that were due to a tipped pass by another player, and then he would pop up out of nowhere, ferociously grab the ball, and without hesitation start running towards the end zone. This kid fits perfectly with the team attitude that we had this year, and presumably, we will have going forward.
