The way I see is if the guy is capable of being an instant starter, I'd draft him in the 2nd if that is where he is slotted.
I would definitely classify Derron Smith as a day one starter. I also believe he is one of the better players in this draft in terms of football instincts. You can't teach instincts, and they are what separates a great player from a good one. I also never see him give up on a play, he's got a crazy high motor. Though, he did play through a hernia last season, which did slow him down. However, it is certainly not a permanent injury, and I look at it as nothing more than something that is permitting us to steal him a round or two after he could've gone. He is a late 1st/early 2nd prospect if not for the sports hernia last year.
Derron makes a ton of great plays that are clearly due to nothing more than great awareness, he had 4-5 picks during his college career that were due to a tipped pass by another player, and then he would pop up out of nowhere, ferociously grab the ball, and without hesitation start running towards the end zone. This kid fits perfectly with the team attitude that we had this year, and presumably, we will have going forward.
