A Lions beat writer has something different to say:

Kowalski on The Huge Show: Titans' Jim Schwartz top candidate for Lions job right now
by The Grand Rapids Press
Wednesday January 07, 2009, 10:30 PM

Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski joined Bill Simonson on "The Huge Show" to talk about the search for Detroit's next head coach. When asked, Kowalski said the top candidate for the job right now is Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

"I think it's Schwartz, I believe that. I think it's Schwartz and then (Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie) Frazier and (Miami assistant head coach Todd) Bowles are kind of 2a and 2b," Kowalski said. "Right now, they're looking for a guy who believes in the same things they believe in. And if you look at the Tennessee Titans, that's the kind of team you want to mold yourself after."

Listen to the entire interview below, including why Kowalski believes there's "zero" chance the Lions will take Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 overall pick in April.

The Lions job is actually a pretty good one. The owner leaves you alone and lets you do your thing and it's one of the better frannies in the league. I'd much rather go to the Lions than a team like the Raiders.
Garrett will be a good head coach, somewhere IMO.

That might not be a bad gig in Detroit. Seriously.

And if he doesn't hit it big in Dallas next year, he might have missed his chance. Is that a risk that Jason Garrett wants to take with this lockerroom and those offensive players?

Zero chance of Stafford? Good grief. Who then? Crabtree? It is the Lions. Smith? I wouldn't make him the overall 1 after he got in trouble. Poor judgment.

Stafford is the logical pick. Stanton can't stay healthy and they have no other QB on the roster that they can trust.

Dang Lions and Broncos are going to piss me off.

Hostile sorry but Garret needs to Jump ship he knows Wade is a Clown of a headcoach and it is going to cost him next year so he is better off jumping ship.

Funny how a lot of people on the board think it is all Jason but GM's do not think it was a Jason issue it looks more like they know it is a Wade issue who knows better than denver on that subject they kicked him to the curb pretty quick

I agree. If Bradford comes out I believe they will pick him #1 & if he doesn't come out it will be Stafford. They have to.
Unless they go offensive line? Michael Oher? Andre Smith?

Mark my words, 49ers will trade up to get Bradford, but Lions will take Stafford at 1.

the lions will likely go through several choices for HC before someone agrees.

The speculation is torture. The giddiness by some fans perplexes me.

I agree. Those who think Garrett was our biggest problem this year need a hammer to their frontal lobe.

I don't like the idea of JG leaving Dallas. I don't think he is the problem. I think lack of discipline and accountability for the whole team is the biggest issue the Cowboys have.
I wouldn't mind seeing Stewart gone or Wade gone.

The more Garrett wows people in the head-coaching interviews, the more I begin to wonder if he isn't a better head coach in the making than he is a coordinator. I just don't think he has a great feel as a coordinator, but I am absolutely open to the idea that he might have the sort of vision/approach needed to be a head coach.

Which is why I find our situation here so perplexing. If it's true Jerry is keeping the staff in place largely so he doesn't lose Garrett as his potential head coach, it's time to take a crap or get off the pot; in other words, name him your head coach or be fine with him leaving.

Jerry should just make Jason HC now.

What accomplishment or goal was met offensively?

1. Was there one game we stole becuse we outcoached the other side?
2. Was our back up QB position solidified in practice?

3. Do our receivers have a coordination with the QB that indicates effecient practice work habits.Or does the QB gaze downfield then chuck it to the TE.

4. Did the offensive line play like a well-oiled machine that got better as the season progressed?

Loved JG the backup QB Thanksgiving 1995.
Now...not so much.

Because another year like last and he has NO shot at any job.

Win two games in Detroit and he's back to being a genius.:D

Exactly!!!

This is not Buffalo or Detroit, this is freaking Dallas!!!

If Garrett goes 9-7 next year in Detroit, they will build a freaking statue of him outside Ford Field.

If Garrett goes 9-7 next year in Dallas, he will need a police escort to and from the stadium for his own protection.

Seriously fellas, I am not joking here.

Gotta wonder how many really want the Lions job. Garrett has lost a lot of luster this year and for him to be the leading candidate tells us one of two things: no one any good really wants the job or whoever is doing it at the Lions is as dumb as Matt Millen.

Coach Tecmo is the leading candidate???

Are we sure Matt Millen actually left???

Jerry will find a new OC instead of a new HC, sending the fans into deeper despair--if that's even possible.

But after Cupcake blows another season, then there will be no more obsticles to getting Shanny, Holmgren, or maybe Cowher.

We may have to survive Cupcake for 1 more year before we get a real coach in here for 2010.

The light at the end of the tunnel is faint, but I think I am starting to see it!!!!!
