The defense was far from being perfect yesterday but 150 yards were given up by the defense after we were up 35-10 and went into prevent mode and starting taking some of our players out of the game. They definitely need to be better going forward but there was a lot of rust to knock off. Our 2 starting DEs, DLaw and Crawford (by default), missed the entire training camp due to surgeries. I expect us to get better as the season progresses and when Robert Quinn returns from suspension and we can pull Crawford on passing plays.

We were trying to stop the run (the Saquon Barkley effect) which is why we went with the likes of Hyder and Covington who add little to no pass rush. Not sure we're playing with as many run stoppers vs Washington.

I'm on the side that thinks bend don't break won't work against the good offenses. Thus playoff failures without a different attitude.

I am pretty sure the Defense knows they didn't play well. It was the first game.
I would rather they peak around playoff time. I will take 17 points any day and every game.

I dont think the DL unit played up to expectations as they could not hold Barkley at bay as he had over 100+ yards rushing and there was non existent pass rush on eli manning in the pocket aside from one line twist stunt by DLaw

And we face much better quarterbacks and offense vs the likes of eli down the road.
Hopefully Quinn return and DLaw getting more in game shape from along layoff will help the rush, but we also need more interior disruption and rush as well these rotation guys stepping it up.

But defensively as a whole they responded with limiting giants to only 17 points when it counted.

Pretty sure this is the fourth thread about how many yards the D gave up. Let me sum up the responses....

"Yardage doesn't matter, only points!"

"No, yardage DOES matter!"

Both sides are correct to some extent. Obviously, points matter the most, but if you are continually giving up lots of yardage, it's difficult to rely on getting turnovers to stop that from being turned into points. It took a sack and fumble (on a play where we could have been called for a defensive hold) to possibly keep the Giants from scoring more.

You've got to give the defense credit for making the stop, but it's OK to be concerned that it was necessary because we allowed so much yardage.

Yeah imo the yardage in the 4th quarter didn't matter. We were just trying to let the clock run, the Giants posed no actual threat at that point.

They didnt play upto their potential,The giants created massive holes for Barkley and we would have been in trouble if this was a close game.

Zeitler. Hernandez, Halapio and Solder played outstanding and we played a lot of nickel. Heath did little more than eat blocks as the up man. The secondary was atrocious tackling outside of Woods and Lewis.

We adjusted by playing Lee more and things cleaned up. At the end we went back to nickel and they got some runs. Outside of the big run on their first drive those gaping holes didn't amount to anything for them.

And the guy I've been praising, Kerry Hyder, didn't come through either. We got a little pressure from Armstrong, but mostly we only really caused any disruption for Eli when Lawrence was in the game.

I really don't understand with Lee as our third linebacker why we wouldn't play base D more, especially against a team with a good running game.

I was more disappointed by the lack of pressure. Everyone was talking about how deep we were on DL. But it seems like we're back to being top heavy as usual. Only times we've been dominant on DL has been when we've had dominant performances by Lawrence, Gregory or Irving. And two of those guys aren't here anymore.

Yep, that's what I saw too. I think Quinn can come in and make a difference. But these DT's are nothing great. And this was the Giants woeful Oline.

I do think the Giants' line is better than it has been. Still, if we're going to have a great defense instead of just a good one, we've got to give Lawrence some help on the pass rush, without having to blitz in order to get to the QB.

Agreed, it is better than 2 years ago or even last year.

Yardage matters and so does idiotic coaching. After the Giants were able to move ball rather easily on most drives then not give the ball to Barkley in 3rd and 1 and on 4th and or whatever it was is mind boggling. That wasn’t the only questionable play calling not to mention the bogus flag that was thrown on Elijah in the red zone.

I’m not saying those plays would have mattered because we still would have most likely outscored them but what I am saying is that if it weren’t for the Giants putrid coaching and a bad flag, there most likely would have been more points. It wasn’t our shut down D and against better offensive teams and better coached teams those yards will matter and will most likely end up being converted to points. They better get their act together ASAP.
