What are the best hot dogs that you can purchase at the grocery store or even a elite/specialty grocery store like Whole Foods? It's playoff time and parties are starting.

I've been trying to find a hot dog that taste similar to the street hot dogs you can buy in New York.

Thus far, here are my rankings

1. Hebrew National - good taste but not very juicy and texture is a little rough
2. Ball Park beef hot dogs-juicy and good texture but no flavor
3. Nathan's hot dogs- less flavor than Ball Park and Hebrew National; It may be from New York but it tastes similar to all the other grocery store brands
4. Boars Head Hotdogs-tastes like any of the cheap hotdog brands but you pay more for them

Hard to find a BAD hot dog, but if I can find them, I'd always go with a natural casing dog. The best dogs I've ever eaten were Mckenzie natural casing dogs (vermont). Hard to find in Va though.

Their knockwurst are even better... they're as good as I remember way back when I was a teenager living in Heidelberg...

Hard to find, though...

Maybe it's just me, but something about the two quotes above made me squirm in my chair a little?

If any of you ever come to Tucson there are hot dogs here to try. I don't know squat about name brands other than Vienna beef.

First of all Sonoran style hot dogs. They wrap the hot dogs in bacon and fry them. The they put them in the bun with a small amount of pinto beans & grilled onions. Then for toppings you can add shredded cheddar, jalapenos, guacamole, and some salsa.

You will get hooked. Trust me.

Luke's Chicago style hot dogs. Vienna beef dogs, brown mustard, diced onions, homemade sweet relish, tomato slices, cucumber slices, serrano peppers, Clausen dill pickle strip and a splash of season salt.

Pat's Chili Dogs. Pat's is an institution here. No credit cards, debit cards or checks. Cash only. Worth it. They make great cole slaw and sauerkraut dogs too.

Just give me a hot dog with some cheese and mustard or just chili and cheese......you can keep all that other junk.

I don't know anything about HotDog vendors. I just know I like Dairy Queens with Chilli and Mustard and Sonics with Chili and mustard about equally. Can you actually buy one somewhere else????

FAir hotdogs are usually pretty good. but anything at the Fair tastes better than if you were to eat the same thing somewhere else.

Neiman Ranch makes the highest quality (meat-wise) hot dog around. Excellent if you are just having a dog without many fixin's.

I had an amazing hot dog in Vancouver a few months ago at a stand called JapaDog -- Japanese style with diakon, soy sauce, green onion, and wasabi mayo. I thought it would be terrible and only ate there since I got intruiged after passing it so many times. Freaking amazing hot dog.

WOW, no joke, this sounds great! Gonna try this for my next hangover.

2-3 of your favorite dogs, split lengthwise, pan-fried until caramelized on cut side. Then served on lightly toasted white bread w/ a generous smear of mayo, is also a staple.

Toothpicks will keep the bacon in place.

And a close second is historic Blackie's in Cheshire on the Wtby CT borderline. Many swear by Blackies.

Yeah, I'm kind of a hot dog purist. At the most, you can throw on some onions and relish. No ketchup on my dogs. That's a sin as far as I'm concerned.

One note:

Sams Club sells Vienna Beef hot dogs. They come in a box of 40 for $7. You can't find Vienna Beef in the grocery store and they don't come in small packets but I'm considering buying the box if I host a Superbowl party. I'm excited by this discovery because I was told you can only get Vienna Beef in Chicagoland area

Most vendors in Manhattan use Hebrew National, iirc. They probably just have that special taste since they're cooking in the cart.

We used to call them dirtwater dogs. Totally yummy, though.

I agree with Hos on the Sonoran dogs. Best ever. When I went to school at U of A we used to go to a place called BK's in South Tucson at least once a week. Bacon wrapped hot dogs with cheese, mayo, salsa, beans, and a roasted pepper for some spice. The key is the soft bun that it comes in. Whenever I go through Tucson now I always take a little detour for some Mexican hot dogs. :)

I hate you guys. I am trying the whole new year, new resolution to get in better shape and you are making me crave hot dogs. Great.

Honestly, hot dogs themselves aren't all that bad calorie/fat-wise. It's the gobs of crap piled on 'em.
