I want an impact free agency signing. We are close, now it's time to spend.

The whole "we don't go after big free agent signings anymore" was true of those 8-8 teams. It was futile.

This is no longer the case.

It's extremely uncommon, and rare, for a hit -- a hit out of the park -- to come in and get 10+ sacks his first year. What Bosa is doing, what Mack did, is incredibly rare.

So draft DE, but sign one, too.

Damn you, Greg Hardy. Damn you. And to a lesser extent, you, too Gregory.

America's cheapest team? Half joking, we always resign our own and that's definitely more essential; even overpay at times. A shot or two in FA wouldn't kill us though. Scared money is lost money.

The last thing this team needs is to miss on a big FA signing. Please no. I'd prefer to spend on a number of quality starters, we aren't getting Mack or Bosa in FA either. We will end up getting LaRoi Glover. Or Brandon Carr.

BTW -- look at Pats chillin at the bottom. If I was an NFL owner I would offer Belichick a 10 year 100 million dollar contract and that would be a bargain!

Ive looked at the list of this years free agent class over and over and their really is not much out their that fits our needs.. well compared to last years class. The top edge rushers in free agency is Chandler Jones but the Cardinals have made it know they plan on keeping him long term and he wants to stay in Arizona as well. He will either be getting an extension or the Franchise tag.

Then their is Melvin Ingram and JPP. Ingram seems more like a pure 3-4 OLB due to size. Don't know If Jerry and son would be willing to give the money he will command for a situational player. And JPP has already said he wants to stay a Giant. Giants organization has said they feel the same way. An extension may happen before seasons over.

The best players i see us going after are Nick Perry and Jabaal Sheard. Perry is very fragile though and Sheard is an above average starter at best. If their asking price is too high for the production then we may pass.

Last but not least we are left with the aged stars who can be situational players and mentors to rookies like Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney, Demarcus Ware, Robert Mathis, James Harrison. Or older Defensive ends who are on the decline like Charles Johnson or Chris Long but can still be base down ends.

Their will be options but sadly i see us waiting it out like we have the last 2 offseasons and making a player like Charles Johnson our target and maybe someone like Dwight Freeney to be a 3rd down player.

The 2017 salary cap shouldn't be an issue, there are always players who will have their large base salaries converted into signing bonus to low their cap numbers and a few who will take pay cuts or get released.

Travis Frederick has a guaranteed $14.221M base salary next year. Dallas can create $10.4M in cap room with a restructure.

Tyron Smith, Tyrone Crawford and Sean Lee can all do the same thing.

So can Dez Bryant, or he might even get an extension.

Jason Witten may get an extension that will lower his cap hit next season.

Tony Romo's number will decrease if he is traded/released.

There are a handful of other moves for smaller savings that may also occur.

I ran the numbers and DAL can max out at 60m under if they restructured everyone, had 8m rollover, traded Romo after June 1st and cut Free, Wilbur and Hanna

They will not go anywhere near 60m but it is there......those moves leave them with around 36 players under contract......re-sign 5-6 Cowboys, sign 3-4 FAs and add 7 Draft picks and a handful of UDFAs

Well, speaking of the Pats, remember a certain key free agent signing they made that put them over the top <cough Revis cough>

I'm not talking about some numbskull blind free agent signing, it needs to be considered with deftness and precision.

Damn. I'd go hard after JPP.

The Cowboys and Commanders being fined in 2012 had an impact on this. Especially the Skins
This was 2013-2016.......DAL extended Romo in 2013 with 25m in cash, so that counted in this cycle

They other big signings were extending SLee, TSmith, Dez, TCrawford and TFred....it is a much more disciplined approach than I would recommend

Yup!!! We need to be players, B

What a damn hit on Talib. Say what you want about his off-field shenanigans

Harris Jr is still my favorite CB on that squad, tho, despite Talib's ints. Talib is a stud, Harris Jr is an alien, the way he plays at his size.

We have been drafting great so adding a FA or two should be easy

RDE, WR, SS are the biggest needs imo........getting Mo, Tapper, JSmith and maybe Church would be big....................RGregory is a pipe dream if he isn't suspended

Key signings for me, along with Carr. But you and I have discussed this quite a bit.

We need to go hard hard hard at JPP

B, you think we can/will/perchance make a decent run at JPP (if he isn't franchised)?
He showed a lot of heart coming back....he is the type to go after ....he might have a sports hernia this year which could change things with NYG

What penalty will the 12 teams that are over the cap get if they haven't gotten back under it by the end of the league year? What steps can they take to get under the cap again in time?
That graphic is not about being over the cap.

If a team gives a player a 20M signing bonus in 2016 but that player's 2016 cap hit was 5M, all 20M still counts as spent in 2016 under the cash accounting rules.

The minimum cash spend is a different set of accounting rules than the rules that govern being under the salary cap.

The minimum cash spend is meaningless to the Cowboys. It is only interesting if you want to see how much teams with a lot of cap space like the Jags will be forced to spend in upcoming years.
