How Did Tony Romo Go Undrafted?

Seems to me the guy has done well for an UFA! He did play at 1-AA, but he won the Walter Payton Award as that level's best player. Many publications had him slated to be drafted anywhere from Round 3-7, yet no one took him. Around 20 teams were trying to sign him as an UFA, we won out. Seems this type of thing doesn't happen at QB much anymore. Looks like we landed a good one via unconventional means. Thoughts?

teams these days just dont have the patience to take the time to develop a young QB for more than 3 years especially if they very far away. Parcells obviously did and saw that 4 years from then that he could be a really good player. One of the few things for which i do appreciate Parcells for doing

I'm no BP fan, but I'll go along with that.

Many of the so-called experts had him going anywhere from the 3rd-7th. 3rd seemed a little high at the time but most thought he would go in the 5th or 6th round. This happens every year, on draft day no one pulled the trigger on him because of his low level of competition. Had someone taken him from the 5th on, it probably would have been labeled a good pick by most.

He was rated fairly high going into the draft that year. Used to be QB's were drafted early out of places like Morehead State & Youngstown State, but not anymore. The last QB drafted real high out of a small school must be McNair out of Alcorn State.

Agree that QBs under great pressure to produce almost immediately. It's rare that a team will give him the necessary 2-3 years to get the job done. If the QB is a 2nd day pick, his chances are lessen. Besides often coaches aren't around more then 3-4 years which means OC change and QBs have to learn new systems, etc.

Because he's not as good as Ricky Ray and Ray didn't get drafted so they thought Romo shouldn't????

Well he said he had a bad day at the combines, he slipped running both his 40's and ran like 5.0's and then did bad throwing.

There were a lot of people who really liked him. He was one of the big sleepers of that class. I seem to remember him performing poorly at the combine though. He didn't run well, and for whatever reason I don't think he threw well that week either, although he did throw to everyone.

As usual, too much emphasis on the combine. Many fall through the cracks. Romo seems to be one of those.

i could've sworn that earlier articles said he wasn't invited to the combine and he was there just to throw balls to the wrs.

DIIA QB's rarely get drafted. If you play D2 , you are playing against sub par competition. QB's cant be judged by dominating D1 scout teamers on the D2 level.
