How do we match up with eagles?

As is the case with most here, my enthusiasim is increasing.

I'm starting to project our starting line ups/ strenghts style
Most importantly how we match up with teams on the schedule.

I come bac to one team and one match up - eagles

Fact is, you have to beat the champs to be the champs. I'm starting to believe we can play with them and perhaps win.

Here's how I see it. I want other opinions.

What excites me the most is our D against there O:

Big picture, we're slightly undersized but quic.

They play more of a speed then a power game. 5-8 185 starting RB
Heavy pass to run mix. Not many two TE formations plays to try and line up and power us. If they go two TE, neither is that good, especially in blocing.

3-4 puts someone over C Fraley, a below average player. Historically this has given them the most trouble. Ferguson/ Glover tag team will dominate this matchup and give us a huge advantage in controlling the line of scrimage.

I see them abandoning the running game early.

I have faith in our ability to both rush McNabb and contain him. Ware, Burnett and Canty are a huge upgrade in speed and agility in our front seven.
Those 3 along with Roy will fare very well in this area.

I also favor our coverage matchups. Newman, Henry, Glenn should fare well against Owens, Lewis and Brown.

I believe we now have the oportunity to dominate this offense. Hold them to 17 or fewer points in both games giving us a chance to win either or god forbid ...BOTH

Our O against their D is the tough part of the matchup.

I do favor our Oline and two TE's against their front seven and this is where we have to win the game.
As good as thier D has been the last 5 years the run defense has been spotty. Jones needs to see 30 plus carries in both games.
Their secondary is just too good for Johnson, Glenn, Crayton and Witten.
I see our 3 best options as Jones right, Jones left and Jones up the middle.

If we do get Jones rolling, then we may have some play action opportunities.
We have faired well in picing up their blitz and in overall pass protection against them under Parcells.

Final Analysis: Two very tight, very low scoring games. A lot of three and outs. Field positon and special teams will be the difference. They have the advantage in passing game/McNabb. We have the advantage in balanced attac/running game/Jones. If Bledsoe gets overwelmed and forces throws we lose if not we win. In fact, I'd bet we won't loose to them in a game Bledsoe doesn't throw an interception.

I predict if we let McNabb run around for 14 seconds, we will not win :banghead:

I mean really, 14 freakin seconds..... :banghead:

Two things....

Witten had a couple of huge games against them last year. They couldn't cover him. So, the new equation is Jones/Witten = W.

Also, Henry matched up with TO last year. TO had 4-109 and 2 tds against him. Here's the rub though. 3 for 97 and 2 tds came in about the first 16 minutes of play. For the rest of the game, and overtime, Henry held TO to 1 catch for 12 yards and 5 invompletions. It seemed that Henry figured out how to cover him. This could be big for our matchups this season.

Good post, agree with most everything. While Fraley is a good center, he struggles when he has a guy at the nose. That is going to be a big advantage for us.

That play was/is tough to handle. What you have to remember about that play was how big it was in the game. We were moving the ball pretty well at the time, trailing by only 14 points. That was a 3rd and 15 play were I felt pretty comfortable of getting the ball bac and putting up some more points before halftime. That putt us down by 21 and just cut out my heart.
I believe Parcels had this play in mind with many of his decisions on talent acqusition.

I'll give Parcells the benefit of the doubt on Henry.
With that said, I believe that after that first 16 minutes, Cleveland may have decided to give Henry just a little bit of additional help the rest of the game. Didn't see the game, just a guess.

Nice post Grevus

I dont know if you saw the Pittsburgh/Philadelhia game last year, but the Steelers front 7 totally took the Eagles out of their game.

I think our front 7 has the potential to be a lot like the steelers, outside the ILB's (Farrior and Bell over James/Shanlee and Nguyen--even though Bell was hurt a lot last year)

And I'll take this years secondary over the Steelers of last year any day of the week

Its up to the OL and Drew Bledsoe IMHO

Cleveland's pass rush was about as effective as ours last year too

If McNabb runs around for 14 seconds this year I expect to see Ware absolutely plant him.

Unfortunately for the Fecals, in the big picture and all the success they've had against us in the past 5 years, they STILL dont have anything to show for it..... :laugh2:

Couldn't agree more. O-line and Bledsoe are critical.

Rogers sure will get a baptism by fire with Kearse and Strahan

Thank goodness for a healthy Campbell

Id love to see Crayton develop into a bigger version of Kelvin Martin this year

Does it matter how we match up against them? beating them is less important Dallas winning the super bowl is more important, we need to worry bout how we match up against the AFC

their still the front running contenders to capture the crown again this year, so our focus should be on them, not Philly
