In the storied history of our Dallas Cowboys, there is a short list of “sacred” jersey numbers: 8, 12, 22, 33, 54, 73, 74 and certainly 88. All of those numbers make up most of the Cowboys great ROH/HOF members- Staubach, Aikman, Emmitt, Bob Hayes, Tony D, Randy White, Larry Allen, Bob Lily, Drew Pearson, and Michael Irvin. Those numbers are legendary. Some of those numbers are so special no one very wears them. Like #12 and #74.

But I wish we would stop forcing some of these “famous” numbers on young potential star players and let them create some new numbers without a legend attached.

For example- why does every potential star WR have to be #88? I felt a little bad for players like Dez and Cedee Lamb being forced to wear 88. I could see a young player thinking, “I don’t want to be the next Michael Irvin- I want to make a new number famous- like wearing #87”.

Maybe Tyler Smith doesn’t need to wear Larry Allen’s #73 so he can create a new legend wearing #67 or some such number. I like that Micah Parsons has made #11 his own.

Where do you stand on this? Should young high draft picks for the Cowboys be expected to wear numbers like #88 or #73? Or should they be allowed to create their own legend? I’m in favor of letting a young kid create their own legend around whatever number they want. It would be cool to create a new legend around a different number- like 87 or 13, or 25….etc.

    I’m fine with players wearing 9, 33, 54, 74 and 88 etc

As long as 8, 12 and 22 are not worn I am not bothered by it.

I agree. 12 and 74 are off limits, at least for a very long time, but after that let the players choose their own number appropriate to the position. Let them establish their own legacy. But this is Jerry’s Fantasy Football team, and him picking numbers for some players allows him to fantasize to a time 27 years ago when his team was winning trophies and that he was the force behind that.

Like in baseball where even the manager wears a number, have the head coach wear a number signifying how many years it's been since we went to a superbowl….

I thought #54 was really going to be motivational for Bobby Carpenter.

Who says they force numbers on any players. The fans and media? Not the team.

I don't really care about Jersey numbers ....... the whole 88 thing is just Jerry trying to suck the fans into nostalgia.

I would love it though if they replaced the current 00 of Rowdy with another mascot, or just nothing. As if they retire it by burning it. The jersey and costume (not the actual person).
Oops, sorry to ruin anyones fantasy that Rowdy is real like Santa Claus. :muttley:

I agree totally bob, but ol jerry likes to sell those jerseys, as he is low on cash!
I think 88 is just a jerry thing and he will continue to do same thing with that jersey.
I dont like it, as I think they should earn it first. And then use it only if they want to.

I guess one of the reasons I wish they would stop forcing numbers on players is I like the idea of a player creating a new aura around a different number. If I was Cedee Lamb, I would prefer to be anything other than #88.

I don't think I care. I did stop and think about it. It just doesn't matter to me. There's virtually no connection between a modern player wearing #12 and Staubach. Dez or Lamb wearing 88 hasn't changed the fact that I think about Irvin when I hear 88. Neither did or has done enough to supplant that in my brain.

As far as some JAG tarnishing Emmitt's number, that can't happen for me. Sure, some kid may wear it and end up not being even close to the same caliber. But that sucks for him, not me. I was watching when they had to peel 22 up of the dirt over and over again...holding his shoulder together as they did...only to watch him break through the line on the next play. You can't tarnish that.

Use the numbers. Let the players pick. Let Jerry pick. I don't care.

None of it will matter if we don't win again.

Thats a tough number to live up to and its not a coincidence that these first round picks get saddled with these numbers B/C that is the expectation for their career. Thats a lot of pressure. ............ though i'm still trying to figure out why they gave Parsons Danny White's number:laugh:

I was never one for retiring numbers except maybe a very special occasion like 42 in baseball. Not everyone for Dallas can wear number 65, for example. At some point these numbers have to be recycled or else they will end up like the Yankees who has all single numbers retired.

Those are camp numbers, once cut downs take place some of these numbers will not be used.

No on 74. Lilly's number should be retired. End of discussion.
