All this talk of trading up, down, sideways, is all Jerruh having fun with the reporters. He has his game plan and does not want to tip his hand and give the other teams bargaining power.
Thinking about it, I am trying to place myself in Jerruh and Wade's shoes. What do the Cowboys need to win the Super Bowl next year?
QB is always a critical position. As long as Romo can concentrate on his game and not get distracted by uberwood, we seem to look pretty good there. If he tanks, so does our season, but that is always the gamble. Ask Phillie! No need to draft QB early to win this year.
O Line looks pretty good right now. Not great, and certainly no depth, but as long as there are no major injuries, we should get by. Even if the best OT in the draft was available to us at #22, it would not help this year. Our weakness is at left tackle and that won't be fixed by a rookie. Besides. Flo' has at least one more good year in him, so there really is no weakness. Our guards are solid and Columbo is a good RT. No rookie Olineman gets us there this year.
It is hard to think of any rookie WR's that can step in and play to the level of T.O. and T.G. I don't care if their name is Johnson. We need to get younger at the position, but for one more year, we are outstanding at WR.
D ine is good enough. I wouldn't give up on any of them this year. Give Spears, Canty, Hatcher, Fergie and . . . (I drew a blank! Who am I forgetting here?) a training camp with Phillips and see what they can do. Even a stud DE won't make that big a difference to win a Super Bowl.
DB's are a real possibility. Had we had two Newmans instead of one, our pass D would have been good enough to take us to the big game last year. That being said, would a rookie CB or FS be able to shut down the likes of Manning or Brees? Again, a rookie will not get us to the big game.
I think we are tricked out at LB. Carp/Ellis on the strong side, James and Akin in the middle, and Ware tearing offenses up from the back side, with Burnett in reserve, we are in great shape. Again, a bad injury could hurt because of lack of depth, but no rookie is going to come in and start. So LB will not get the big game this year.
So, Ladies, Gents, and Hostile, that leaves running back. MBII is a terrific change of pace runner. He is a hammer in the red zone. But the rap against him continues to be that he has never been an every down back. JJ is serviceable, and maybe with Parcell's not riding his back everytime he hits the line, he lives up to his potential. BUT, an impact player like Reggie Bush can take this team to the championship. That means one person. Peterson. If I am Jerruh, and I want to get over the hump this season, I need to have that guy with WoW in my backfield. If I am risking my draft for a championship now, I have to grab AP, regardless of next year's picks.
