How good is McClay?

How good is McClay? It all depends on what time period we are talkin. From about 2014-2018, Pretty decent except for Taco. But since then? Not so good. He needs to rebound big time this offseason. He needs to hit a couple homeruns. If he fails this offseason, Even Jerry won't tolerate it. He will be gone.

Tristan Hill btw might be getting better. He was what? 21 years old when we drafted him? Just a kid. He has alot of upside still, he's learning how to be a pro.We need to give him time. If he balls this year and stays healthy, we may have something.

Agree, Hill never had a chance with the hyper critics, but like you said, he was young, and will just be turning 23 on March 25th.
As long as he progresses in the right direction and its translates in his play, than I dont care that he didnt just somehow get it.
Fans are always going to expect quicker results from our higher pics, even though Hill was Round 2 @ 26, so not like he was a top 10 pic.
off topic, but you would probably know,,, how many total pics now after comps awarded?

10 now. We can really find some studs in this draft with the ammo we have as far as picks. This is how you build the nuts and bolts of your team. We have a real chance to take a giant leap with this 1 draft. We just need high IQ football players that love the game. We need guys like KJ Britt, and the safety Grant..and we MUST get some thugs for the dline/oline. It all starts up front. We can talk Pitts and all the skill players we want, but they do little good if your getting manhandled in the trenches. I dont care what round we find them, JUST GET EM. We need to flesh out the primadonnas on this team and get back to being thuggish. Its how you beat teams like KC and New Orleans..PHYSICALITY.

I agree, but just looking at the draft, Im not seeing as a dynamic defensive prospect in the top ten or that could be there at 10.
9 more pics could all be defense and would have to be one of this franchises most horrific drafts historically if they dont hit with that much ammo on a few nice additions to this starving D.

Broaddus just stated yesterday that the talent evaluation listened too much to the last regimes coaches. Especially on Defense. Remember Rod saying he will just coach up? Need quick twitch players? On and on.....

That’s what this is really about. Defense. The offense evaluation has been really good. Looks like now McGovern and Schultz are players as well when we weren’t sure.

How good is McClay? How many playoff wins does Dallas have since he’s been around?
yes lets dump this on one person..i gues s Garett, marinelli and Richard are gone let turn the pitchforks to one person..this was team effort in gettig to what 2020 looked like and the transition to new staffs etc and finding the right players to keep, cut, and/or bring in has been quite the mess. this doesnt mean it wont settle down. maybe Quinn finds the right balance..

WM doesnt make the decsions on his own and coaches and others influence final choices. lets not dump it all on him, Garett, McCarthy , Marinelli, nolan all had hand in FAS and the draft the last 4-5 years..mostly good picks..all teams have duds or medicals effect production etc the struggle between Marinelli and Richard caused some odd ball picks front and back that didnt mesh this is why the defense is mess add nolan comes in a tried to purge this change the system and now we have 3 different POVs mixing players on the filed in 2020 hopefully this gets major adjustment.

yes Jerry and WM let them make these mistakes but they tried to appease the coaches give them the grocery's to cook the meal and well the shopping lists were flawed..

each year is new year and whining about years past when football season are truly restarts year to year ONE OFFS..so many factors influence new season, last year was the pandemic mess , and a new staff with a record number of injuries'..Nolan fell on the sword but this wasn't the work of one factor. Move on from it and move forward..

I think he's overrated by some, but the structure is not well known on how how this circus is run.

Yeah I’m one of those guys. I think if he was the GM we would already have been in a Super
Bowl.

The problem is that he’s restricted to doing a very specific job - finding the talent that the head coach wants for his preferred scheme. And he doesn’t pick the head coach - that’s the big one.

I keep hearing Mclay is the star and about his talent acquisition . But i am not seeing how the Taco and LVE and other FA acquisitions have benefited this team . The defense cannot get worse than it is .
How good is Mclain if he is making the decisions ?
exactly. one thing for sure, he has been down right awful in defensive drafting. we have only had one impact player, namely Lawrence in 15 years.......so McClay responsible for a lot of that.

There have been enough good players through here lately to have done better as a team than they have.

The problem is the soft coaching that the owner insists on hiring....among plenty of other things McClay has nothing to do with.

McClay is as good as Stephen Jones' Cap team's skill set

McClay doesn't coach, and he doesn't have final say.

He's got a seat at the table, but it's not the type of authority that makes the final difference on the field.

His biggest stick is actually in risk management. He can give you all types of intelligence and information. He can fidn you talent that fits your requirements, but if you make an emotional decision or suddenly lose your ability to think rationally how can he nor any other scout fix that.

Ultimately this falls on the GM who's job is to have the pulse between the two camps. The coaches and the scouts.

No one person puts the package together, but ultimately with all organizations someone makes the call on the pick. We all know who that is. It is his job to have the cahones to read all the signs in the room, do his OWN homework and lead the organization.

There is a reason why there was the rise of the Coach/GM position in recent years and why Parcells held the position in Dallas. Not everyone is suited to be a GM, and the politics and machinations within a draft war room don't always work out as evidenced by numerous failed draft picks and draft years by numerous teams including the Cowboys.

There were plenty of draft blunders by everyone's hero Jimmy Johnson as well.

Same with anyone and everyone.

We are lucky to have McClay around here whether anyone knows it or not.

I really don't feel like going back to drafting Tony Dixon and Willie Blade high.

Would yall rather go back to Jerry and his drinking buddies putting the draft board together?

Dallas' drafts may be overrated, but they are way better than they were at one point under Jerry....without question.

Yea some think he is the GM
Yes.

Opinion by committee in Dallas.

Jerry knows he can't do it all himself, he just wants every ounce of credit should it ever happen.

If Dallas ever actually had any playoff success McClay would have been long gone....yet the results of those games were beyond his control, and out of the reach of blame toward him.

The guy is good at what he does. Period.

What happens thereafter.....not so much on him.

If he were the GM, Mike McCarthy would not be the HC. He would have probably been able to to talk Sean Peyton away from the Saints or claimed Ron Riviera before the WFT did.

The MM hire felt whimsical.

What bothers me is he couldn't see that our personnel on defense didn't mesh with Nolans scheme. I feel like this should have been recognized up front...by someone.

Peyton and Jerry are actual friends, so I'm not sure on that one.

I do believe Sean Payton will coach this team someday.

Its a pure shame for us that we couldn't reel him in sooner somehow. Would have been worth several high picks.

The only active coach I know of that could both handle Jerry and his antics but still command respect in the locker room.

We can all wish can't we?

<sorry for the rant lol>

The main obstacle to Will McClay being more effective has been the FO's reluctance to maximize the talent in veteran free agency.

Oftentimes, the shoddy handling of the talent in house is on Jerry, Stephen and the coaches who've remained silent, despite faulty decisions.
