How is this defense so bad?

Ware is older, fighting nagging injuries, and it shows. He's turned into an average player. Everyone else is just overrated, talent wise. Combine that with the continuous flow of ex-Home Depot workers as defensive starters and a defensive coordinator whose best years were a decade ago and you get the ridiculous play we've witnessed for 2013. It's kind of a perfect storm all brought to you by good ol' Jerruh. Bad personnel decisions and coaching moves are just coming to a head....

Ware is not even average anymore, he is bad

They are bad because the Dline lacks talent. The Dline is not pressuring the quarterback anymore and other than Hatcher we have no passrusher. Dallas needs to drop all 4 picks in the draft on the Dline next year to see what maranelli can really do.

Don't forget SAFETY! We need serious help at Safety.

amazing how well Rob Ryan turned around the Saints D with many of the same players as last season's historically bad D

It's still funny to me how people want to replace Church when he's the only guy who came to play every game this year. He deserves an apology from cowboy fans obsessed with sexy players. Sexy as in (4.3 40) sexy. I still haven't seem one ball sail over church like Heath has.

I'm not saying they're loaded with talent but you'd think a team with Brandon Carr, sean lee, Demarcus ware, jason hatcher, Bruce carter and Orlando scandrick would be better than 32nd and historically bad.

Its just so embarassing to watch every week

Ware, Carr, Lee, et al, are just fine. You neglected to mention that this defense is also "stocked" with such notables as Drake Nevis, Ernie Sims, BW Webb, Jarius Wynn, and company.

Screw marinelli, really. He is only here because of Kiffin, kick them both out

Somebody needed to say it. Marinelli is incredibly overrated on this board and really needs to go along with every other coach on this team. 3rd string DLine or not, he should be lighting a fire under those guys ***** and get them to put some effort out there. I didn't see any heart from the DLine last night...they just gave up

This defense sure does have an awful lot of players who suddenly "regressed" this year. I wonder what the cause of that could be?
Like who?

They are all playing at about the same level they did last year, an Hatcher has performed better.

Ware, Carter, the entire secondary, etc.

I would argue that, other than Carter, all are playing pretty much the same as they did last year. Church was out an the other safeties weren't here...

Actually, the only guys on the team last year are the corners, Lee, Carter, Ware, and Hatch.

Ware has certainly regressed. You can't say for sure whether he's still dealing with nagging injuries, but he says he isn't, so anything to the contrary is speculation. Carter is playing his way off of the team, and both Carr and somehow Claiborne are playing worse than last year. Maybe not Scandrick.

It's really difficult to determine if the scheme is a problem. It would be great if it was the scheme, because that would be easier to replace than the players; however, it's almost impossible to determine.

IMO:
Carr: Trying to do too much. Needs more pressure on the QB to be effective.
Scandrick: Excellent 3rd CB, but not big enough to be the full time 2nd CB.
Webb/Moore: Just not good at this point.
Claiborne: Injured.

Church: Ok if surrounded by good players but not good enough to "carry" inferior players around him.
Heath/Wilcox: Rookies.

Carter: Maybe a slow learner with the scheme change.
Lee: Can't stay on the field.
Wilber: 3 weeks of experience at SLB
Sims: As Forest Gump would say "not a smart man".
Lawrence: Rookie UDFA.
Durant: Inactive against the Bears.

Ware: Shoulder/neck/stingers have caused a significant decline.
Selvie: Would be better as a backup.
Hayden: Would be better as a backup. Not able to pressure the QB.
Hatcher: Double teamed and limited by stinger issues.
Street Free Agents: Nevis, Wilson, Irvin, Wynn

I would say all of those guys are playing the same as last year....other than Carter. Ware wasn't good last season, and Carr, Claiborne, and Scandrick certainly haven't improved.

Ware had 11.5 sacks last year and was injured the last part of it.

Define "the last part."

After week 4, he only had 7.5 sacks. Only had two games with more than 5 tackles. 5 FFs all year. And that's playing next to both Hatcher and Spencer. All of this while being a part of one of the worst defenses in Cowboys history. The guy was a non-factor all year, injuries only became an excuse late in the year.

A double digit sack year is not a "non-factor." I'm not even going to argue this anymore.

When you only have 7.5 over the last 13 weeks of the season it is.

The point is, he hasn't regressed unless you are going all the way back to week 3 last year. He's the same player he was for the majority of last year...a non-factor.

7.5 sacks over 13 weeks still projects to just under double digit sacks for a full season, and you're including games where Ware played with one arm.

There were 23 guys with at least 9 sacks last year. They are all impact players?
