How long before a new rule is in place to make sure Dallas never gets that chance again?

You know Mara is livid as well as others. I mean the kid didn't even give another team a chance. Jerry's selling skills coupled with that star on the helmet and that stadium is too much to compete with. I think the league will address the Collins situation and change their process for if it ever happens again.

a little overblown. To make a rule that would punish one team in hindsight is dumb because you never know when the situation may arise again in your favor. Not to mention I do not think they would have the votes. As mad as Wash, Philly, SF, Pats, Saints are and I am sure there are a few other teams. I bet JJ has little more juice in this vote then say Mara or Kraft

No rule change needed. Every team had a shot at signing him. I was not at all opposed to spending a late day pick on him.

It's the league fault some body should have taken a flyer on him. If you give someone a "choice" as to which team he wish to play for? Its a no brainer, especially since we are competitive again.

it won't be sold as a way to punish Dallas but everyone will see it for what it is. No one will want to compete with Jones, the star, and the stadium if this happens again. They will fix it so they don't have to ever again. There are close to a dozen new rules over the past 20 years inspired by the Cowboys and their players. This will be the next one.

It worked out so much better this way. He really turned the whole situation into a positive by being able to choose where he wants to go and wanting to be part of something special.

That's my point. The other owners know that and will change the rule and probably allow the player to go to the supplemental draft.

that's not going to happen because if an agent thinks his clients stock is falling in the draft, he'll ask to remove him and place him the supplemental draft to increase his stock value..

That just prolongs the inevitable. The NFLPA would not sign off. If you for whatever reason slide completely out of the draft, you have to go to the supplemental draft where more than likely you will still not be picked.

They could change the rule that a player will not be able to reenter the draft the following year if they refuse to sign with a team. A team would of surely taken a late round flyer on Collins if his agent didn't make that threat.

They won't let that happen. It will have to be a serious legal situation that earns the exemption. No player and his agent are going to fake something like this. If they did, they are just making his draft stock plummet even more.

The league could have prevented this by not using a 'zero tolerance' policy and understanding the special circumstances and allowing him to go in the supplemental draft or go in the draft again. Instead, they didn't and the Cowboys capitalized on it because we are America's Team and it's easy to see why a player like Collins...who got screwed over during draft day...should get what he wants and he wanted to play for his favorite team.

That's what bothers so many people, we are America's Team and Collins just proved it once again.

Going in the supplemental draft makes no guarantee you will be taken higher if at all. Unless whatever made the draft stock to fall was fully rectified the player will be lucky to get drafted there. If you have 100% 1st round talent and the situation was less serious than the one collins was in a player will get drafted in the regular draft.

any rule changes will take a lot more than Mara, There are 31 other owners and they get a major say and vote for any and all rule changes.

Not much they can change - if he sets an appointment, he can only make one trip if he wants. That's the definition of a FREE agent.

Besides, how could another team compete with this?

They could change the rule to allow a player with an unexpected legal issue to withdraw from the draft. He could then clear up his issue and enter the supplemental draft and be taken closer to his true draft stock.

I understand that. You don't think there are many other owners upset about this that want no part of competing with Jones for a player like Collins in this type of situation. We just got a glimpse of what would happen if there was no draft.

Why Rex was out there 1st to talk to Collins, Miami had him coming in for a visit as well. I don't think anyone is out to get the Cowboys. Sorry I think the conspiracy stuff is ridicules

What planet have you been living on? they have been making these new BS cowboys rules for years. the Emmit Smith rule. the Erik Williams Rule. the Roy Williams horse collar rule.it's been one thing after the other. Mara and others will make sure it never happens again. the NFL is pissed about this. SO WAKE UP!

I don't think its a conspiracy theory. I think there should be a serious concern among the owners that the Collins situation, should it ever happen again, should be handled differently. This situation is so different than anything else because all 32 teams would want him and be willing to pay him the maximum allowed by the rules. In that situation, the high profile and successful teams have too much of an advantage to land the player. If Collins was a Patriots fan growing up and signed with them without giving anyone else a chance, how would we all be feeling about the way it all unfolded?
