To change free agency rules would require support from the NFLPA via CBA, which they will never give unless they get something huge in return, which would be way more than what the NFL would be willing to offer given the rarity of this happening.

Despite Collins' draft threat to re-enter the 2016 draft if not selected early in the draft, every NFL team had the option of drafting him even in the late rounds. How many times have we seen players get drafted by teams with late round picks knowing the player was committed to another sport like baseball? Then, 2-3 years later when their other career fails to materialize, they want to play football again, and the team that drafted them has their rights.

The bottom line is he was an UDFA and while we can say he was a first round talent, he wasn't drafted and there would be no way to legally differentiate him from any other UDFA. If he had been charged and/or arrested, they could designate that, but just being "someone the police wanted to talk to" carries no legal definition.

You know Mara is livid as well as others. I mean the kid didn't even give another team a chance. Jerry's selling skills coupled with that star on the helmet and that stadium is too much to compete with. I think the league will address the Collins situation and change their process for if it ever happens again.

The easiest thing the NFL could do is simply make the draft 12 rounds again.....Collins would have been drafted then....

This was just a weird situation that had not ever happened before........a sure first rounder that did not get picked in the draft. How many more times will you think that will happen.? And an agent saying that if his client gets picked in the lower rounds will refuse to sign and reenter the draft the next year would not have too many clients rushing to his office. Having said all that, I am sure Mara, Goodell and some of the other owners are beside themselves.

Looks like Jerry ain't getting his SB after this.........Oh well, better to go out and win a few more.
