How long until Tiger passes Jack Nicklaus?

To turn discussion away from Barry Bonds, let's turn to another sport where you hit a ball with a stick. I'm a casual PGA fan at best, but it's hard to miss what Tiger has done. With Sunday's PGA Championship win, he now has 13 major wins. How long until his passes Nicklaus (18)? Five years? Less? More?

Or, to ask another way, what happens first - Tiger passing Nicklaus, or A-Rod passing Bonds?

It will be close as to who will get the record first. Maybe between 6 and 8 years before Tiger passes Jack.

If Bonds doesn't push it to 800 next year, A Rod should be close in 6 years. If Tiger only wins an average of 1 per, he'll have 18 at the end of the 2013 season and he'll still be 4 1/2 months from his 38th birthday. Jack won his last at 40, but he wasn't exctly ripped. Tiger is in as good a shape as most pro football players. He'll have the body of a 25 year old man when he's 40, so as long as his desire holds out, he may be able to contend for majors till he's 50. IMO Tiger will win 5 more in the next 4 years and pass Jack by 2012. Heck, he could go on a tear where he wins 3 or 4 in a row. Anyway, Tiger gets the record for sure and he does it before ARod passes bonds.

Yeah, it'll be Tiger. He'll win at least one a year and could easily win 2 or 3 in a given year.

Actually Nicklaus won a Masters at Age 46 in 1987 era - remarkable final 9 charge....

Lets give Bonds another year and month and 3/4 to this season. He's likely to be at 800. And if pitchers keep ducking him a 2009 season is not out of reality. Julio Franco is playing at what age 49 still? Clemens at age 45?

Arod needs 71/2 or so more seasons of 40 homers to be there. Injuries and decline make this not a slam dunk given that Arod breaks Bonds mark.

I don't see Griffey doing it -

Tiger got married and has a kid now. That has slowed him down- so it probably will take 3-4 years.

I think he'll do it in 2010.

From now to end of 2010, he'll have 12 opportunities. His last 12 chances, he has won 5 times and he is getting better and I don't see him slowing down. In fact, I think he is even more hungrier to chase down Jack and do a fly-by.

He has a nearly a 30% win percentage in majors.

13/44 majors.

So it would take 61 majors to get to 18 at that pace, roughly. Seventeen more majors puts him at just over 4 years, making it in 2012.

Care to elaborate?

How is Tiger passing Nicklaus bad for the sport? For many people (myself included) he is the only reason I give golf even a passing glance, from time to time.

So parity in the NFL is bad, but it's desirable in the PGA?

If it wasn't for "tigger," these golf tourney would lose half their viewers.

Could you imagine having watched the PGA with Woody Austin and Stephen Ames in the final group, and no Tiger chasing? ... :puke:

Tigger will break record in 4-6 years. He's averaging a tad over 1 per year to date.

The question then is what can Tiger do age 36-50?

Golf is a sport if in shape where you can actually improve in that timeframe. I can see Tigger going 25 or so
