I am just curious to see what you all our thinking about how many carries we should give Julius in the Pre-Season.

I say give him between 3-5 carries per game, and then get him the heck out of there.

I would not even be opposed to letting him sit out a game or 2.

Proptect Julius, and get a real good look at A-Train, MB3, and Thompson.

I agree. We already know what we have in julius. I want to see more of barber and thompson. Not a real big fan of a-train, but he is a big bruising back.

No argument here. Start him off slow and build up his carries by the end of the preseason.

Agreed. I'm rooting for one and done. I'd also like Witten in a ballcap for the entire preseason but it ain't gonna happen given Parcells' attitude and our TE situation.

I think he needs work..and will be like some other famous backs who do better when geared up for opening day, not rested.

In addition, I think Bill will want to check out a lot of JJ related factors. like how he is progressing as a receiver, how he works behind Rivera, and in general how the Sparano line pulls for him, how JJ's patience awaiting openings is coming along, how his blitz reading is progressing. How he works with Bledsoe.he has to get used to a new set of hand offs. Timing, etc.

If Rogers is starting, the off tackle runs factor in too.

He is just a second year back..imo, he needs work

About 10 carries each the first two games, considering the first team will play just the first half probably, or less ..then as many as 15 in the 'dress rehearsal'.

Rest him in the fourth, play him just the opening set.

I agree on 10 carries to start, but if he's looking good early, we should just sit him out the last game or two ...

I hear ya, LTN, but it's not like Parcells isn't able to evaluate those things in camp. The Spears scare just reminded me of how quickly the outlook can change when a key player is injured. JJ absolutely needs to answer the lingering durability concerns, but losing him in the preseason would be a bear. Hopefully, he plays sparingly and only behind our first string O-line (ah, ah..not so fast, Torrin Tucker..)

I'm all for protecting the franchise in pre-season, but Jones, the OL, Bledsoe, Campbell, Polite/Bickerstaff, all these guys need reps together to get ready for the regular season. I'd play the first unit for 2 or 3 series in each of the first 2 games, and the whole 1st half in the 3rd preseason game. I wouldn't give JJ more than 10 or 15 carries in any one game. The last game, 3 carries, tops, and get him ready for Jack Murphy Stadium.

I agree, he should not carry more than 20 or 25 carries during the whole preseason. We know what he can do....the Panthers learned the hard way with D. Foster.

SB, JJ could hurt in practice too. Like Marcus did.

I just think he is a work horse runner who will thrive on early competition, so he goes into the season 'in stride' , on a roll, if not 'midseason form (but wouldn't that be nice!).

Of course the lion's share of the work and evaluation gets done in practice anyway, but the preseason games fine tune.

I agree, don't risk him behind anything less than first team oline, but if this is the guy our whole O is gonna be based on, the play action predicated on, he needs enough actual live action to get that taste...get that timing - I think it will benefit him psychologically and physically.

He strikes me as that type of back.

Julius isn't a seasoned vet, he needs work in the preseason. I'm thinkng 5-10 carries a game for the first 2, about 15 for the third game and maybe 5 for the last game.
