Ok, my best thinking is that we had about 6 million left in cap money. After we resigned Bradie James today, how much cap room do we have left, and do we need to resign Gurode, Colombo, Al Johnson?

I think Kenyon Coleman is FA next year too, but thats about all big names left, and when is Flozell Adams contract up?

Even if the Boys want Coleman, he will be able to get a lot more time elsewhere. I doubt he re-signs. If Hatcher and others progress enough maybe the Boys would ship him off if they feel comfortable enough behind him. NFL trades midseason are not likely however.

Johnson I guess could be back if he's willing to be a backup, because thus far is there any doubt Gurode looks like the future at center?

Columbo should be resigned if he continues to progress. It's also a plus he likes BP and the Cowboys and just a hutch he'll be loyal to the team for giving him a 2nd shot.

(I just realized you meant re-signing for this season and not in the offseason. I don't think any of those players above should get midseason extensions. If anyone Gurode but I would not give him an extension.)

After 2 games.

Come on. Inconsistency has been Gurode's trademark.

Agreed. He knows he has a lot riding on this year, so let it play out more and then make a decision.

As I said: Thus far...
Gurode progressed last season, progressed in camp, looked good outside one preseason game and looked good these first two games. the only decision I've made is that thus far I see him as the center of the future.

If Colombo stays healthy, sign him mid-season. Gurode.... wait til the very end. He's one of those fellas that gets a fat new contract and goes overtime on the Doritos and TV.

With Ratliff and Hatcher behind Spears and Canty ... not sure valuable cap money needs to be spent on Coleman.

Instead of re-signing Johnson ... I'd like to see us go after a versatile OL player in the draft, like Ohio St's Doug Datish. He is the Buckeyes starting center this year and was their starting LT last year. He has also started at OG. Johnson has been plagued by injuries, and is limited both physically and versatility wise.

I've never heard Gurode has a weight problem so I doubt that's a problem area. I'd wait til at least mid-season to offer him a new contract. Just being cautious in resigning him since it's taken him into his 5th season to become the center we always envisioned. Either he's matured an awful lot or allowing Torrin Tucker to leave (wouldn't have made team anyway) for Tampa was best thing that could have happened. Anyway if he still performing at same high level later in the season as he has shown thus far, wouldn't wait any longer to keep him around.

Similarly I wouldn't resign Johnson as Gurode's backup. We need a backup who plays similar to Gurode but also can backup at another OL position--which Johnson can't do. Besides if Gurode went down, don't want same problems to arise if we have to go with Johnson. I'm hoping our 2nd 7th rounder in this year's draft (E.J. Whitely--can play all 5 OL positions) can come off this year's IR to become legit backup next year to Gurode. Whitely's smart & got the size we like at C. Besides he was told before his knee injury by Parcells that he would play C & OG positions.
