What I just found out is that several teams don't have cheerleaders today. Where have I been?

Seriously, does anyone really still care about the cheerleaders? They're like the booth babes at car shows. Maybe cheerleaders were a bigger deal back before the internet and porn but today I'm not sure what purpose they serve in pro sports.

from someone that has been around a while, I appreciate the cheerleaders for the lovely distractions that they are...

See, this is my point. I think it's mostly the old timers that still give a rip about NFL cheerleaders. lol

Nothing but who is watching them instead of the game? And I'm talking about them being a big deal. In the 21st century, they don't have quite the impact they once did. We live in the pornography age and in a time where girls dress sexier than that at the grocery store. lol

This. I don't see why a professional team needs cheerleaders. They are pointless and a waste. No one pays attention to them. Having cheerleaders in college and below is fine but not for the NFL.

I don't agree with a couple of you...for people that go to an NFL game, you go for the entire experience. You certainly are there for the game primarily, but anything else that can be considered part of the experience is fine with me....the tail-gating in the parking lot, the warm-ups, the FOOD & beverages, cheering with 80k+ like-minded people....I don't get to go to too many NFL games and I haven't seen Dallas live since I went to game in Philly about 20 years ago...so, when I do go, I soak in everything that I can....and, during the game, if I am paying for this experience, then people around me are going to "experience" my loudness

plus, especially with Dallas, there is the tradition of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders aren't there for our TV viewing pleasure. They entertain the crowds at games and it adds a female element to the atmosphere for our other halves.

Most importantly, they help for publicity, marketing, public appearances to promote something, fundraising for charities and my yearly calendar :D

This. I'm a woman and I love the DCC (for different reasons, I suppose). I don't think porn has anything to do with it. They provide entertainment for those who appreciate it. I bet the women and children enjoy the cheerleaders more than the men. It's part of the entertainment package. IMO, the DCC have kept it classy, walking that fine line between sexy and lewd.

And also in the case of the Cowboys, the cheerleaders provide an excellent boost to the team's overall popularity. Their calendar sells very well. Their TV show has great ratings (8 years and counting). They have entertained the troops more than any other entity. And they have a brand of their own that is a source of pride ( and income) for the organization. Because of their iconic appeal, I always put them on a different level from other pro squads. I'd say in the case of the Dallas Cowboys, the DCC are as important as the star and the hole in the roof. It's an awesome package, unmatched in sports.

Not only that, but the DCC work with many charitable organizations to help other people; if I remember correctly, some of them have also travelled overseas to support the troops....cheerleaders aren't just pom-pom waving girls yelling out scripted cheers...they do MUCH more than that (and they aren't hard to look at, even though I am likely old enough to be a father to many of them :))

Considering that cheerleading back then was probably closer to cheerleading than it is today most squads today are nothing more than dance squads.

I know when I was a cheerleader in 1st-year uni, combined with school it really left me tired and without much of a social life. It takes up a ton of your time as a student. Constant practicing, a lot of physical exertion, travelling with the team, etc. Can be exhausting when you're young and also trying to juggle studying and relationships etc. Most cheerleaders have real jobs or school to go along with their gigs. It was too much for me, and it takes someone mentally tough to keep it up which is why pro and uni squads alike see a lot of turnover every year. Kudos to those who can stick with it but I bet the number of girls who try out is getting less and less each year.

For going to game, with all the downtime, I'd probably be looking at the cheerleaders but on tv, they are a non factor.
