Let me climb into the way way back machine and look for an instance...

There's one! Darrelle Revis signing with the Pats in 2014.

But he's one of the exceptions to the rule.

I don't think that qualifies, it was a team friendly one year deal so the pats didn't have to tie up much, if any, cap $ beyond one year

Remember when Jerry asked "Primetime" Sanders if he wanted 15 or 20 million. He replied... both. That was a huge deal at the time and it worked out pretty good.

The current Superbowl Champ plus the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl with Deon Sanders and with the 49ers kind of jump out the screen at you....but three Lombardies.

How often has signing a big time free agent worked in getting a Super Bowl win?

I am talking about these back breaking deals,

I really can't think of any?

Reggie White to the Pack. Simeon Rice to the Bucs. Deion Sander to the Cowboys and 49ers. Ken Norton to the 49ers. Several QBs most recently Drew Brees. Randy Moss and Darelle Revis to the Pats.

Those are just the megadeals in question they all got franchise tag value or more of course each Super Bowl team has several free agents as well.

OL and DL moves well. Skill positions are more hit and miss.

Do those deals work every time? No. Do they work some of the time? Yes, but there are no guarantees because nothing in the NFL deals with absolutes - much like quarterbacks and Super Bowl wins. There are too many variables. But one variable is assured.

If you believe in what you are doing and you see an opportunity - then you try.

What is there to compare this too? Back breaking deals don't happen very often. Bronco's signed Peyton Manning to a big deal and it got them to the Super Bowl. Before that.....I may be missing someone but maybe Mario Williams was the last guy to get a big contract in free agency?

You don't see many big free agency signings....most big money deals come from teams re-signing talent.

I think we constantly look for something to pin point on why or why not a team has success in this league. Fact is, the best teams in this league win. The teams with the most depth, the most healthy teams, the ones with best quarterback play, the ones with best offensive/defensive line play....I don't think a player getting a big contract hurts teams. I don't think Mario Williams contract has hurt the Bills.

This Dolphins thing with Suh may not work..but it won't be because of Suh or his contract.

This is a ridiculous question -- you are asserting crazy qualifiers to prove your point. Not only did the team have to "win a SB," they had to have recently signed a "back-breaking FA." There just aren't that many of either.

But, if you modify your qualifiers some, there are plenty of examples.

Any of those equivalent to Suh deal? Adjusted for times of course?

Your question is loaded from the onset. Only 1/32 teams will win the super bowl, and Suh's deal is the largest defensive contract in the history of the league, so your answer is no.

Pretty rare that a big name FA is a true game changer. At the end of the day, if you aren't drafting well, your team will suck, plain and simple.

So you break the bank just to be competitive, ohhhh... Got it!

1/32 has NOTHING, I repeat nothing to do with let's say 10 back breaking free agent signings over 10-20 years.

But thanks. I thought you get a Super Bowl trophy for 2nd place or best pre season record.
