No offense, but you know you're reaching to make a point when you have to dismiss the Revis and Manning deals.

No stretch.

Revis - one year deal. Hardly mega.

Manning - back breaking. But didn't win Super Bowl.

My point and re-point both make sense.

No offense taken. I just think you are wrong. The question is simple.

1/32 has NOTHING, I repeat nothing to do with let's say 10 back breaking free agent signings over 10-20 years.

But thanks. I thought you get a Super Bowl trophy for 2nd place or best pre season record.

Actually, it does. It's like flipping a coin. Each instance is independent of anything past or present.

Deion with us (more to take him away from SF) Revis to NE; Reggie White to Pack; Brees to NO; that is 4 lombardi's there. So it happens; once again redv is wrong

Reggie White was a major reason why the Packers hoisted the Lombardi in the 90s. He turned around the perception of Green Bay completely. They were an also ran in the 70s and 80s, then White shocked everyone in 93 by signing a massive contract with them and recruiting other Free Agents to play for the Packers. Outside of Brees, that would easily be the best Free Agent signing imo.

It can work and I don't think winning a Super Bowl defines if a FA signing 'works' or not. The issue usually becomes that even if it works it typically works for less time than the team expected. Sign a big-time FA for 5 years, he may play great for 2 years and drastically decline in year 3 and be useless in year 4.

Making the playoffs, selling tickets, improving a team's profile are all good reasons to sign big time FAs. Winning the Super Bowl is always the ultimate goal, but there are many of factors in play.

If you sign a FA and he plays brilliantly and you don't win the Super Bowl, it does not mean the signing was a failure. The FA did his job.

For what he was paid not performing better than average is a bust. He was signed to replace average.
