How the skins are doing it...

Personally, I could give a s*** about what they're doing--this nonsense about having to out-FA each other is silly. And until they're even within sniffing distance of a Super Bowl, I still don't care. We're taking the tack of the Pats & others (who HAVE been to Super Bowls in recent years), which I personally think is much more sensible (plus, it's Jerruh's money, not ours, to spend).

However, in case you care, this is from PFT. (PFT, not me, so if you want to argue--go argue with the PFT folks.)

'SKINS GO FROM CAP STRAPPED TO CAP HAPPY

As the Washington Commanders continue to amass new players days after they supposedly were teetering at the edge of cap hell, plenty of folks around the league are scratching their heads.

The 'Skins are spending big again, making a big splash in free agency by reeling in receiver Antwaan Randle El, safety Adam Archuleta, and tight end Christian Fauria. The Commanders also picked up receiver Brandon Lloyd in a trade on Saturday with the 49ers.

Randle El reportedly gets $11.5 million in bonus money, a ridiculously high amount for a guy who'll be No. 3 at best on the depth chart.

Then, on Monday, the 'Skins scalped safety Adam Archuleta, formerly of the Rams, on a deal that we're told is worth $30.18 million over six years. We're told that the package includes $10.585 million in guarantees, making it the richest deal ever signed by an NFL safety.

So where are the supposedly cap-poor Commanders coming up with the cap space to get these deals done?

They freed up $4.4 million a week ago as part of the deal that made linebacker LaVar Arrington a free agent, and they shed several veterans on the eve of free agency to create more room. Likewise, it was reported that they planned to convert $13.5 million in roster bonus payments into guarantees, which would then be spread over five years.

And don't forget about the extra $7.5 million in cap room that popped onto the books as part of the new CBA.

Our guess is that these new deals will leave the 'Skins close to the $102 million ceiling for 2006, and that there will be more tinkering with contracts in order to free up more money for more signings. Eventually, they'll need cap space to sign their incoming rookies.

As our official site miserable guy Dante observed in our newest PFT PodCast, the extent to which teams are overspending in the early stages of 2006 free agency suggests that there really would have been a flood of new money into the market if the uncapped year had come to fruition.

Old news.

Can we start moving all these Skins threads to the NFL Zone. It hurts my eyes when I have to go through the main board to find information about MY team.

Who cares? Danny Boy will sign everyone and their dog, we will hear all offseaon how the Skins will win 13 games and cruise to the SB, then they will collapse, lose double digit games, and we will hear about how next year they will dominate everyone

It's like clockwork, as sure as the tides

Did they ever pass the CBA rule that would limit total one year cash expenditures? I remember it being part of the discussions?

Wow. Are teams in charge of managing their own cap? Is it an honor system? If so someone needs to audit their books.

You're whistling in the dark.

This isn't the Norv years.

This isn't the Spurrier years.

This is the Gibbs years.

A Super Bowl is not guaranteed. But double-digit loses?

Please. Pass the pipe.

The clock breaks every now and then. You just gotta put in new batteries, batteries like Llyod, Carter, Archuleta and Randle El

Only 1 team has every been successful in doing what you are trying to do, the 1994 SF 49ers, and they already had the second best team in football before they signed all those players.

Washington will never win a SB with Little Napolean as the owner. Hell, they will never even make it to the conference championship.

Hon, don't be fooled by a few posters here. Most of us could care less. The Boy Blunder is welcome to spend as much as he wants. You're the fools paying for it (& I live in New Carrollton, MD, so I well know how much he charges you idiots for parking & watching practices).

It makes it all that much funnier when you fail every season. This one will be the best, because the brain trust there clearly is shooting their wad on players & assistant coaches, thinking they're going the whole way this year.

Yes, you've clearly won the March Super Bowl. Applause applause. More suckers in the DC area will fork out for tickets--which is of course the goal. And it must be nice for ol' Joe to know that he can nap thru most of draft day #1 since you won't be doing anything--at his age he needs his rest.

Let's just see where everyone is come Jan. 2007, ok? THEN, someone can gloat. Maybe you, maybe the Boys. We'll see.

Now now sweetheart. You don't REALLY expect anyone to actually believe that do you? I love bravado as much as the next guy but false bravado is easy to identify.

It's like the cheating husband saying to his wife when she catches him in bed with his mistress:

Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?

You know it's different this time. You hope it's not, but deep inside you know. :)

Know what, hon? That it's March? Yup, I know that. That Jan. is a long way away? Yup, I know that too. Other than that, sorry, no difference. I think it's interesting that the skins best season in a long time was last year--when Danny Boy was actually prudent in FA. Now he's back to his old ways.

As I said, we'll see. One or the other of us will be gloating come Jan.
